US Stock Market Today: Dow Rises While S&P 500 and Nasdaq Open Lower
Wall Street opened mixed on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as investors evaluated third-quarter earnings from major US banks while semiconductor stocks faced renewed selling pressure. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced at the opening bell, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite declined.
The Dow gained 242.4 points, or 0.47%, to reach 52,092.99 at the open. The S&P 500 fell 12 points, or 0.15%, to 7,795.27, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 107.2 points, or 0.39%, to 27,138.73.
These were confirmed opening levels, not closing prices. The divergence reflected differing market reactions to corporate earnings and weakness in technology-related shares.
Dow Jones Gains as Bank Earnings Take Centre Stage
Financial companies dominated the early corporate earnings calendar, with JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo releasing third-quarter results.
Goldman Sachs reported third-quarter net revenue of $18.68 billion and net earnings of $5.29 billion. Diluted earnings per share reached $17.01, while annualised return on average common shareholders’ equity stood at 18.7%.
The investment bank’s results highlighted continued activity across its advisory, trading and financing businesses despite a challenging market environment.
However, earnings reactions across the banking industry were mixed. Investors examined the relationship between reported profits, market expectations, lending conditions and investment banking performance.
The banking sector’s results were particularly important because they provided an early assessment of corporate financial activity and the effects of higher borrowing costs on major US financial institutions.

Nasdaq Under Pressure as Nvidia and Micron Face Selling
Semiconductor stocks were among the principal sources of weakness ahead of Tuesday’s opening bell.
At 5:50 a.m. Eastern Time, Nvidia shares were down approximately 0.5% in premarket trading. Advanced Micro Devices declined 1.2%, while Marvell Technology fell 2.4%.
Micron Technology dropped approximately 2.8%, while Western Digital, Seagate Technology and Sandisk recorded premarket declines ranging from 3.5% to 4.5%.
The selling followed reports about technological progress by Chinese memory-chip manufacturer CXMT. These developments raised concerns about increased competition for established semiconductor producers, particularly in the memory market.

The weakness also affected Asian technology shares, demonstrating how developments in semiconductor manufacturing were influencing investor sentiment across international equity markets.

JPMorgan Reports $15.3 Billion Profit as Citigroup Earnings Improve
JPMorgan Chase reported third-quarter net income of $15.3 billion, equivalent to $5.57 per diluted share, compared with $14.4 billion and $5.07 per share a year earlier.
The bank also disclosed a $658 million loss on investment securities, which reduced reported earnings per share by $0.18. Excluding that item, adjusted net income reached $15.8 billion, or $5.75 per share.

Citigroup reported third-quarter revenue of approximately $23.85 billion, an increase of 7.9% year over year. Its net income increased approximately 40%, supported by improvements in investment banking and wealth management.
Wells Fargo reported net income of $5.95 billion and revenue of $21.87 billion. Although profits increased from the previous year, the revenue figure fell short of market expectations.
These results demonstrated that major US banks continued generating substantial profits, even as investors remained concerned about inflation, interest rates and economic uncertainty.
S&P 500 Faces Pressure From Technology Weakness and Interest Rates
The S&P 500 entered Tuesday’s session under pressure from semiconductor shares and uncertainty surrounding interest rates.

US government bond yields had risen substantially in preceding sessions, increasing concerns about financing costs and the valuations of growth-oriented companies.
Energy prices were another important consideration. Oil had climbed sharply during the previous session following geopolitical developments involving Saudi Arabia, before retreating on Tuesday as traders reassessed supply risks.
Brent crude futures declined approximately 1.7% to $104.78 per barrel in an early Tuesday snapshot. Despite the decline, elevated oil prices remained a concern because of their potential effects on transportation, manufacturing and consumer inflation.
The combination of volatile energy markets, higher borrowing costs and technology-sector selling created a challenging environment for US equities.

Wall Street Awaits Inflation Data and More Bank Earnings
Investors were also preparing for September US consumer and producer inflation figures, along with retail sales data scheduled for release later in the week.
The reports were expected to influence expectations surrounding Federal Reserve monetary policy, particularly after rising Treasury yields and energy prices renewed concerns about inflation.
Corporate earnings would remain an important market driver. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley were scheduled to report results on Wednesday, October 14, extending the financial sector’s reporting season.
Tuesday’s opening movements showed that Wall Street was responding differently to individual earnings reports and industry developments. The Dow’s early strength contrasted with weakness in the Nasdaq, while the S&P 500 reflected the competing influences of corporate profitability, semiconductor competition and macroeconomic uncertainty.
