Stock market today (October 12, 2026): Wall Street ended Monday’s session mixed, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average higher while the S&P 500 finished close to flat and the Nasdaq Composite slipped. A sell-off in memory and chip shares weighed on technology, while energy and value-oriented stocks held up as oil prices rose again.
Stock market today: how the major indexes finished
The Dow gained roughly 0.4 percent, helped by a rotation away from heavyweight growth names. The S&P 500 ended down about 0.1 percent after last week’s record finish at 7,811.54, and the Nasdaq fell about 0.4 percent. Moves are rounded, and final index levels should be checked against official exchange data.
The split between the Dow and the Nasdaq showed investors selectively reducing exposure to technology rather than leaving equities altogether. With few company reports on Monday’s calendar, sector news and analyst calls drove much of the trading.
Chip stocks weigh on technology
Semiconductor and memory names were the main drag. Micron Technology dropped more than 3 percent after a Chinese memory maker announced progress on a new memory-cell design, and other memory-linked shares in Asia also fell. Because chip companies carry large weights in the Nasdaq and the S&P 500, their decline held back both benchmarks even as many other stocks advanced.

Stocks in focus: eBay, Salesforce and Chipotle
eBay rose about 4 percent after an analyst named it a top pick and raised its price target. Salesforce gained after an upgrade, and Meta Platforms was among the communication-services names that advanced. Chipotle Mexican Grill fell after Starbucks said it is not planning to acquire the chain, ending speculation that had circulated earlier in the session.
Large banks have sold off over the past month, which makes this week’s results closely watched.
Oil, gold and bond yields
Crude oil extended gains on Middle East supply concerns. West Texas Intermediate traded around 93 to 94 dollars a barrel, up roughly 2 percent, while Brent held near 106 to 107 dollars. Higher energy prices lifted energy shares but also kept inflation concerns in view.
Gold traded near 4,190 dollars an ounce, down about half a percent. US cash bond markets were closed for the Columbus Day holiday, so the 10-year Treasury yield remained at its last reference of 5.24 percent from Friday. What to watch next
Earnings season picks up quickly. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo are scheduled to report on Tuesday, October 13, followed by Bank of America on Wednesday. Investors will look for comments on lending, trading revenue and credit quality, and for any sign of how higher yields are affecting balance sheets.
September inflation data is also due later this week and could shape expectations for the Federal Reserve. Our US stock market week-ahead guide lists the key events and speakers for October 12 to 16.
The session showed a market rotating rather than retreating: weakness in chips was offset by gains in energy, communication services and selected value stocks. Whether that holds will depend on bank results, inflation figures and oil.
