Sensex Nifty Today: Rupee Rallies on RBI Measures as Indices Hold Flat

Sensex Nifty today: Indian equity benchmarks gave up early gains and traded close to Friday’s closing levels on Monday, 12 October 2026, even as the rupee staged its sharpest one-day recovery in weeks after a package of RBI measures. Crude oil above $100, a rising bond yield and continued foreign selling kept investors cautious.

Sensex Nifty today: where the indices stood

The Nifty 50 moved in a narrow band of roughly 22,490 to 22,530 in morning trade, while the Sensex ranged between about 72,280 and 72,450. Both benchmarks opened higher but surrendered those gains within the first hour, leaving changes of a few tenths of a percent either way.

Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of about ₹3,569 crore of equities on Friday, a factor that has weighed on large-cap sentiment through the week.

Rupee jumps after RBI steps in

The rupee opened at about 95.8 per US dollar, compared with Friday’s close near 96.7, a gain of roughly 1%. Last week it touched a record closing low of 96.88 and it is down nearly 7% so far this year.

The move followed measures announced by the RBI on Saturday, 10 October. They include a special dollar window for Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, effective 12 October, a cut in the limit for derivative deals without an underlying exposure from $100 million to $5 million, and a 20% cash reserve requirement for banks against certain foreign-currency hedges above $2 million. We covered the liquidity side of the package in our earlier report on RBI liquidity measures and the ₹25,000-crore bond sale.

India’s forex reserves fell by $12.95 billion to $734.61 billion in the week ended 2 October, after an $18.34 billion drop the week before. Analysts cited in market commentary see the RBI as especially watchful near the 96.50 level.

Bond yield and crude oil

The yield on the benchmark 2036 government bond rose to 7.3553%, its highest since March 2023. A planned ₹25,000-crore open market sale of government securities and tighter daily cash reserve requirements have added to the supply and liquidity picture, while elevated US Treasury yields continue to pressure emerging-market debt.

Brent crude fell about 1.5% to near $103 a barrel and US WTI slipped to roughly $90, but prices remain high because of Middle East supply risks, including tanker incidents near the Strait of Hormuz. The dollar index eased to around 102. Our explainer on why crude above $100 pressures Indian markets sets out how the oil price feeds into the rupee, inflation and the import bill.
