Stock Market Today, October 15: GIFT Nifty Signals Weak Opening as US Inflation and Global Selloff Pressure Markets

India Morning Market News | Thursday, October 15, 2026 | Onetrader.in

Indian equity markets are expected to begin Thursday’s trading session cautiously as GIFT Nifty indicates a muted to slightly negative opening for the Sensex and Nifty 50. Weakness across global equities, higher-than-expected US inflation, elevated crude oil prices and continued foreign institutional selling are influencing market sentiment.

GIFT Nifty was trading around 22,607.50 at 6:59 AM IST, indicating limited downside pressure compared with Wednesday’s Nifty 50 closing level. Asian markets were trading lower, while Wall Street declined overnight as investors reassessed expectations for US interest rates.

The domestic market enters the session after Wednesday’s decline, when selling in financial and automobile stocks outweighed gains in selected technology companies. Investors will now monitor whether domestic institutional buying and corporate earnings can provide support against the challenging global backdrop.

GIFT Nifty Today: Futures Near 22,608 Signal a Cautious Opening

GIFT Nifty traded at approximately 22,607.50 at 6:59 AM IST on October 15, around 15.20 points below Wednesday’s Nifty 50 cash-market close of 22,622.70. The difference represents approximately 0.07% of the previous domestic closing level.

A separate pre-market report published at 6:49 AM IST placed GIFT Nifty near 22,601, approximately 10 points below the previous Nifty futures closing reference. Both observations indicated a broadly flat-to-negative opening bias.

The distinction between these comparisons is important. GIFT Nifty futures and the domestic Nifty 50 cash index are different instruments, and their levels should not be treated as directly interchangeable when calculating futures percentage changes.

The modest futures discount suggests that investors were cautious rather than pricing in a major opening decline. Nevertheless, overseas market weakness and changing interest-rate expectations could increase volatility after trading begins.

Sensex and Nifty 50: Indian Markets End Wednesday Lower

Indian benchmark indices declined on October 14 as investors booked profits following Tuesday’s sharp recovery.

The BSE Sensex fell 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89. The Nifty 50 declined 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 22,622.70.

Selling pressure was concentrated in financial services and automobile stocks. Bajaj Finance and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the prominent weak performers, while selected information technology and consumer companies provided limited support.

The broader market also remained subdued, with mid-cap and small-cap indices recording marginal declines. The weakness highlighted continued uncertainty over whether the previous session’s recovery represented a sustainable improvement in market sentiment.

US Stock Market: Inflation Data Raises Federal Reserve Concerns

Wall Street declined during Wednesday’s trading session after US consumer inflation exceeded expectations, increasing concerns that the Federal Reserve may need to maintain restrictive monetary policy for longer.

Technology stocks faced particularly strong selling pressure as investors reassessed valuations and the potential impact of elevated borrowing costs on future earnings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined approximately 0.09% to 51,621.48. Broader US equity benchmarks also weakened, while pressure on semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related companies contributed to negative sentiment across international markets.

Higher inflation complicates the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook. Additional interest-rate increases or a prolonged period of elevated rates could affect global liquidity, corporate borrowing costs and investment flows into emerging markets.

For India, the resulting movements in US Treasury yields and the dollar remain particularly important because they can influence foreign institutional investment and currency stability.

Asian Markets: Japan and South Korea Lead Regional Selloff

Asian equity markets traded sharply lower on Thursday morning, extending the weakness seen in US technology stocks.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined approximately 3.6% in an early snapshot, while South Korea’s Kospi fell more than 6%. The technology-heavy Kosdaq dropped over 7%, reflecting substantial selling in semiconductor and growth-oriented companies.

Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and major Japanese semiconductor equipment companies experienced significant declines. The selling followed concerns about higher US interest rates and valuations in artificial intelligence-related businesses.

The regional weakness could affect sentiment toward Indian technology stocks, although domestic earnings performance and currency movements may influence individual companies differently.

Crude Oil Prices: Brent Remains Above $104

Crude oil prices eased during early Asian trading, although they remained elevated because of continuing geopolitical tensions and supply uncertainty.

Brent crude traded around $104.66 per barrel at approximately 7:00 AM IST, declining 1.36%, while West Texas Intermediate crude stood near $94.97.

For India, sustained high crude prices remain a concern because the country imports most of its petroleum requirements. Elevated energy costs can increase the import bill, influence inflation and affect profitability across aviation, chemicals, paints and logistics.

FII and DII Activity: Foreign Selling Continues

Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers in the Indian equity cash market on Wednesday, October 14, while domestic institutional investors continued buying.

Investor categoryNet activity
FII/FPI−₹1,857.44 crore
DII+₹2,670.44 crore
Combined net flow+₹813.00 crore

The figures show that domestic institutional buying exceeded foreign selling during the session. Nevertheless, persistent foreign outflows remain a concern as investors reassess emerging-market exposure following the US inflation surprise.

Gold, Rupee and Global Bond Yields

Gold prices remained volatile as investors responded to the combination of higher inflation and weakening global equity markets. An early market snapshot placed gold near $4,143 per ounce, while silver traded around $56.22.

The rupee was quoted near ₹95.14 against the US dollar, while the Dollar Index stood around 102.05. The US 10-year Treasury yield declined to approximately 5.12%.

Currency movements and bond yields remain important indicators for Indian equities because they influence foreign capital flows, import costs and global borrowing conditions.

Corporate Earnings: Wipro, Financials and Auto Stocks in Focus

Quarterly corporate earnings will remain a major driver of stock-specific performance on Thursday.

Wipro is scheduled to announce its September-quarter results, with investors watching revenue growth, operating margins, deal momentum and management commentary on global technology spending.

HDB Financial Services reported an increase in quarterly profitability, while Tata Technologies recorded revenue growth supported by its engineering services business. CEAT reported weaker profitability despite higher revenue as raw-material costs affected margins.

The results will provide additional insight into consumer demand, industrial activity and corporate cost pressures during the September quarter.

Nifty 50 Technical Outlook and Market Triggers

The Nifty 50 enters Thursday after closing at 22,622.70, below the 22,700 level reclaimed during Tuesday’s recovery.

The 22,600 region remains an immediate reference area, while the previous session’s low near 22,559 provides another level for monitoring short-term price behaviour. On the upside, a recovery toward 22,700–22,760 would bring the index back toward Wednesday’s trading range.

These levels are technical reference points rather than guaranteed support or resistance.

The combination of weak global equities, higher US inflation, elevated crude oil prices and foreign selling creates a cautious backdrop for the session. Domestic institutional participation, company earnings and movements in GIFT Nifty will remain important in determining whether Indian benchmarks stabilise or extend their recent decline.
