Daily Market Roundup: Sensex Falls 252 Points, Nifty Closes Below 22,650 as Oil Prices and Foreign Selling Weigh on Markets

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 | Indian Stock Market Closing Report | Onetrader

Indian equity markets ended Wednesday’s trading session lower, reversing part of Tuesday’s strong recovery as profit-booking, elevated crude oil prices and persistent foreign institutional selling weighed on investor sentiment. Information technology stocks continued to attract buying interest, but weakness in financial services, pharmaceuticals and automobile stocks prevented the benchmarks from maintaining their upward momentum.

The BSE Sensex declined 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 22,622.70. Bank Nifty also finished lower, declining 165.05 points, or 0.30%, to 55,316.00.

The decline came ahead of important US inflation data, with investors reassessing the outlook for global interest rates and the potential economic consequences of higher energy prices.

Sensex and Nifty Reverse Tuesday’s Strong Recovery

Wednesday’s trading session began on a relatively stable note, with the Sensex opening at 73,049.76 and the Nifty at 22,715.75. However, selling pressure intensified during the afternoon, pushing both indices into negative territory.

The Sensex touched an intraday high of 73,195.26 before declining to 72,578.75. The Nifty traded between 22,757.95 and 22,558.95 before recovering modestly toward the close.

The weakness followed Tuesday’s rally, when the Sensex gained 1,109 points and the Nifty advanced nearly 1.6%. Wednesday’s reversal indicates that investors remain cautious about extending equity exposure while foreign capital outflows, expensive crude oil and global monetary policy uncertainty persist.

Energy and IT Stocks Gain While Pharmaceuticals Decline

Sectoral performance was mixed, reflecting selective buying rather than a broad market recovery.

The Nifty Energy index emerged as Wednesday’s strongest performer, advancing 1.47%, while information technology stocks extended their recent gains. The Nifty IT index rose approximately 1.14%, supported by continued investor interest following encouraging quarterly earnings from major software exporters.

FMCG stocks also attracted buying interest, providing some stability to the benchmarks.

In contrast, the Nifty Pharma index declined 1.30%, making it the weakest major sector. Financial services and automobile stocks also faced selling pressure.

Broader markets underperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 declining approximately 0.1% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 falling around 0.3%.

The mixed performance suggests that investors are increasingly distinguishing between companies benefiting from earnings momentum and those facing pressure from higher operating costs, interest rates and uncertain demand.

Infosys and Tata Consumer Products Gain; Shriram Finance Declines

Tata Consumer Products emerged among the leading Nifty gainers, advancing approximately 2.91% to ₹987.90.

Technology companies also performed well. Infosys gained 2.51%, Tech Mahindra advanced 2.20%, and Tata Consultancy Services rose 1.54%. HCL Technologies recorded a smaller gain of approximately 0.61%.

Among the major losers, Shriram Finance declined 3.85% to ₹950. Bajaj Finance fell approximately 2.55%, while Mahindra & Mahindra lost 2.24%.

Bajaj Finserv and ICICI Bank also finished lower, reflecting weakness across selected financial stocks.

Outside the benchmark indices, Tata Elxsi gained approximately 5% following its quarterly earnings announcement. Transformers and Rectifiers India surged around 14% after reporting a 135.3% year-on-year increase in quarterly profit.

Bank of Baroda declined approximately 3.5% following reports of a lawsuit involving the lender and several other defendants.

These company-specific developments demonstrate that quarterly earnings and corporate announcements continue to influence individual stock performance even when the broader market remains under pressure.

FII and DII Activity: Domestic Investors Continue to Provide Support

Foreign institutional selling remains a major concern for Indian equities. The latest verified combined exchange data, dated Tuesday, October 13, showed foreign institutional investors selling shares worth a net ₹1,305.13 crore, while domestic institutional investors recorded net purchases of ₹2,439.24 crore.

These are the latest confirmed figures available for this report. Wednesday’s provisional institutional flows had not been verified at the reporting cutoff and are therefore excluded.

Domestic institutional buying has helped absorb some of the pressure from overseas investors, although sustained foreign selling continues to influence valuations, currency movements and market confidence.

Rupee Strengthens but Wholesale Inflation Raises Concerns

The Indian rupee strengthened for a third consecutive session, closing at approximately ₹95.15 against the US dollar, compared with Tuesday’s close of ₹95.28. The currency briefly reached ₹94.77 before renewed dollar demand from importers limited its gains.

Recent Reserve Bank of India measures aimed at controlling speculative currency positions and reducing dollar demand have contributed to the recovery.

However, India’s latest wholesale inflation figures introduced another concern.

According to government data released on October 14, wholesale price inflation increased to 11.39% in September 2026, compared with 9.92% in August. Fuel and power inflation reached 25.85%, while manufactured-product inflation increased to 9.76%.

The sharp rise indicates that elevated energy and production costs are spreading across the economy. Persistent wholesale inflation could place additional pressure on corporate profitability and influence future RBI monetary policy decisions.

Global Markets and Crude Oil Remain Important Risks

International developments continued to influence domestic market sentiment.

Brent crude traded around $106 per barrel amid concerns about energy supplies and shipping disruptions in the Middle East. Higher oil prices are particularly important for India because the country depends heavily on imported crude.

US equity markets also remained cautious ahead of the September consumer inflation report. Investors are assessing whether elevated energy costs could encourage the Federal Reserve to maintain restrictive monetary policy for longer.

Higher US interest rates can strengthen the dollar, increase global borrowing costs and reduce foreign investment appetite for emerging markets, including India.

Nifty Outlook: What Investors Should Watch Next

Thursday’s trading session will test whether Indian equities can stabilise after Wednesday’s decline.

For the Nifty, the 22,700–22,760 region represents an immediate area to monitor following Wednesday’s intraday trading range. On the downside, the 22,550–22,600 region remains important because the index approached those levels during the afternoon sell-off.

Investors will also monitor additional quarterly corporate earnings, foreign institutional activity, crude oil prices and developments in global bond markets.

Wednesday’s performance illustrates a market increasingly driven by selective earnings opportunities rather than broad optimism. While information technology and energy stocks demonstrated resilience, weakness in financial services and pharmaceuticals prevented a stronger finish.

A more sustainable recovery will depend on improving earnings visibility, stabilising foreign investment flows and relief from inflationary pressures.
