Stock Market Today: Sensex Surges Over 1,100 Points, Nifty Crosses 22,900 as IT Stocks Lead the Rally

Indian stock markets witnessed a strong rally on Thursday, October 15, 2026, as technology stocks led gains across benchmark indices despite weakness in several global markets. The BSE Sensex surged more than 1,100 points during intraday trading, while the NSE Nifty 50 crossed the 22,900 mark, supported by renewed buying interest in information technology companies and selected heavyweight stocks.

The rally came amid important developments involving the upcoming Jio Platforms IPO, the government’s approval of the IDBI Bank stake sale, and fresh volatility in currency derivatives following the Reserve Bank of India’s foreign exchange measures.

Sensex and Nifty Rally as IT Stocks Outperform

At approximately 10:45 AM IST, the Sensex was trading near 73,811, gaining more than 1,000 points, while the Nifty 50 advanced approximately 300 points to reach 22,923. The Nifty IT index gained around 2.3%, outperforming the broader market.

HCL Technologies emerged among the leading gainers, advancing approximately 3.5%. Tech Mahindra climbed around 3.2%, while Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys also recorded gains of nearly 3% during morning trading.

The recovery in technology shares reflects improving investor sentiment following recent quarterly earnings announcements. However, the sector continues to face challenges from uncertain global technology spending, elevated international interest rates and changing demand conditions.

These market levels represent intraday observations rather than official closing figures.

Jio Platforms Announces ₹30,213 Crore IPO

One of the most significant corporate developments is the upcoming initial public offering of Jio Platforms, the telecommunications and digital services subsidiary of Reliance Industries.

The company has announced an IPO price band of ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share, with the offering expected to raise approximately ₹30,213 crore at the upper end of the price range.

The IPO Open Date is October 21, while the IPO Close Date is October 23, 2026. Anchor investor bidding is scheduled for October 19.

The offering comprises up to 27 crore new equity shares and could become India’s largest IPO by fundraising size.

For Reliance Industries shareholders, the proposed listing represents an important development because it could establish a separate public-market valuation for Jio’s telecommunications infrastructure, digital platforms and related businesses.

However, investors should evaluate the company’s financial performance, valuation, capital expenditure requirements and competitive position rather than focusing exclusively on the size of the offering.

IDBI Bank Shares Decline Following ₹52,878 Crore Stake Sale Approval

IDBI Bank attracted significant market attention after the government approved the sale of a 60.72% stake to a Fairfax Financial Holdings-backed entity for approximately ₹52,878 crore.

The proposed transaction includes the sale of a 30.48% government stake and a 30.24% stake held by Life Insurance Corporation of India.

Despite the importance of the transaction, IDBI Bank shares declined sharply during Thursday’s morning session. At approximately 10:02 AM IST, the stock was trading near ₹84.45, down around 6.6%.

The transaction could mark an important development in India’s banking-sector ownership structure. However, its longer-term implications will depend on regulatory approvals, management strategy, capital allocation and improvements in operational performance.

RBI Forex Measures Push Currency Hedging Costs Higher

India’s foreign exchange market continued to experience volatility following the Reserve Bank of India’s recent restrictions on certain currency derivatives transactions.

On October 15, the one-year implied rupee hedging cost climbed to approximately 4.6%, its highest level since January 2022. The three-month implied hedging cost increased to around 7.2%, reflecting tighter conditions in short-term currency contracts.

These developments are important because Indian companies with foreign-currency liabilities frequently use forward contracts to manage exchange-rate risks.

Higher hedging costs can increase financial expenses for import-dependent businesses and companies making substantial dollar-denominated payments.

Meanwhile, the Indian rupee strengthened to approximately ₹94.86 against the US dollar during Thursday’s morning trading, compared with Wednesday’s closing level near ₹95.17.

The contrasting movements demonstrate how the rupee can strengthen in the spot market even while currency derivatives become more expensive.

For Indian businesses, the broader concern is whether higher hedging costs persist and begin affecting profitability or financial planning.

Global Market Weakness and Crude Oil Risks

Indian equities outperformed several Asian markets despite renewed concerns surrounding US inflation and technology-sector valuations.

South Korea’s KOSPI experienced a sharp decline of approximately 8% during Thursday’s early trading, triggering a temporary sell-side trading halt.

The weakness reflected pressure on technology companies and concerns about the possibility of additional monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve.

International crude oil prices remain another important factor influencing Indian markets. India imports most of its crude oil requirements, making domestic inflation, transportation costs and currency demand sensitive to changes in global energy prices.

Any sustained reduction in crude prices could ease import-related pressures, while renewed geopolitical disruptions could quickly reverse those benefits.

Corporate Earnings and SEBI Developments in Focus

The September-quarter earnings season remains a major driver of individual stock performance.

Meanwhile, SEBI’s Secondary Market Advisory Committee is expected to discuss feedback concerning the Closing Auction Session framework.

The discussions could influence future changes to market-closing mechanisms, although no final regulatory decision should be assumed before an official announcement.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The strong recovery in Indian equities highlights renewed buying interest in technology companies and selected large-cap stocks. However, the sustainability of the rally will depend on corporate earnings, foreign institutional investment flows, crude oil prices and currency-market conditions.

The upcoming Jio Platforms IPO could attract substantial investor attention, while the IDBI Bank stake sale may influence sentiment toward strategic investments in India’s banking sector.

For the remainder of the trading session, investors should monitor whether the Nifty sustains its gains above 22,900, whether IT stocks maintain their leadership and how broader market participation develops.
