Friday, November 6, 2026 | Indian Stock Market Closing Report
Indian stock markets ended Friday with a powerful rally, pushing the Sensex above 81,000 and the Nifty 50 past 25,000 for the first time in more than eight months. The advance came despite steep losses across major Asian markets, where technology stocks faced heavy selling following a sharp decline in Wall Street’s artificial intelligence-related shares.
The BSE Sensex closed at 81,028.02, gaining 1,718.01 points or 2.17%. The Nifty 50 advanced 493.75 points, or 2.01%, to settle at 25,030.35. It was the Nifty’s first close above 25,000 since February 27, 2026, extending the benchmark’s winning streak to seven consecutive sessions. The index finished at its highest level of the day, reflecting sustained buying in heavyweight stocks through the closing bell.
Friday’s Dhanteras session was dominated by banking and financial services companies. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and several other financial heavyweights recorded strong gains, while Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the Nifty’s biggest percentage gainer. The broader market, however, presented a contrasting picture, with midcap stocks finishing nearly unchanged and smallcap shares declining.
Indian Stock Market Closing Indices, November 6, 2026
| Index | Closing level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | 81,028.02 | +1,718.01 points (+2.17%) |
| Nifty 50 | 25,030.35 | +493.75 points (+2.01%) |
| Nifty Bank | 59,086.00 | +1,312.35 points (+2.27%) |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | 60,606.65 | -14.25 points (-0.02%) |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | 18,975.05 | -157.40 points (-0.82%) |
The Nifty traded between 24,388.05 and 25,030.35 during Friday’s session, eventually finishing at the day’s high. Closing at the upper end of such a wide trading range was one of the session’s most striking features, particularly after the strong gains already recorded earlier in the week.
Bank Nifty climbed 1,312.35 points to 59,086, reflecting substantial buying across major banking stocks. Its percentage advance exceeded that of the Nifty 50, making financial companies an important driver of the benchmark rally.
The broader indices moved differently. The Nifty Midcap 100 slipped marginally, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.82%. The contrast suggested that investors were concentrating their buying in established large-cap companies rather than extending the rally across the entire market.
Market volatility also increased sharply. India VIX rose 13.35% to 17.66, indicating that expectations of near-term price fluctuations remained elevated despite the strong benchmark closing figures.

Market Breadth
Friday’s market breadth revealed a considerable difference between the performance of the headline indices and the wider stock market. Although most Nifty 50 companies finished higher, declining stocks outnumbered advancing stocks across the NSE.
| Market breadth | Number of stocks |
|---|---|
| Advancing stocks | 1,439 |
| Declining stocks | 2,141 |
| Unchanged stocks | 126 |
| Nifty 50 gainers | 46 |
| Nifty 50 losers | 4 |
Of the 3,706 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,141 ended lower, compared with 1,439 that advanced. Another 126 stocks closed unchanged. This meant that roughly three stocks declined for every two that gained.
Within the Nifty 50, however, the picture was almost entirely positive. Forty-six constituents advanced, while only four finished lower.
The contrast was particularly visible in the smaller-company indices. Large-cap financial and consumer stocks helped lift the benchmarks, but selling pressure persisted across a substantial portion of the wider market.

The presence of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank among the leading gainers demonstrated the strength of private-sector banking stocks.
Insurance companies also participated, with HDFC Life and SBI Life finishing firmly higher. Their gains helped the Nifty Financial Services index outperform the broader benchmark.

The advance in Mahindra & Mahindra provided additional support from the automobile sector, while Titan’s rise added to the strength in consumer-related companies.
Top Nifty 50 Losers Today
Only four of the fifty Nifty constituents ended Friday’s session in negative territory, highlighting the strength of the rally among large-cap stocks.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded the biggest percentage decline, falling 0.58%. Eicher Motors followed with a 0.56% loss, while Shriram Finance and Grasim Industries finished marginally lower.
| Stock | Closing price | Loss |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles | ₹292.00 | -0.58% |
| Eicher Motors | ₹7,669.50 | -0.56% |
| Shriram Finance | ₹961.15 | -0.30% |
| Grasim Industries | ₹3,227.00 | -0.02% |
None of the four declining stocks recorded a fall exceeding 1%. That was a notable feature of the session, considering the sharp losses across several major Asian markets.

The weakness in Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Eicher Motors also showed that the automobile sector’s overall positive performance was not shared equally by every company.
Shriram Finance slipped slightly despite the strong advance in financial services, while Grasim Industries finished almost unchanged.
Friday’s Closing Picture: Banks Lead as Indian Markets Defy Asian Selloff
Banking and financial services stocks delivered the strongest sectoral performance on Friday. The Nifty Private Bank index climbed 3.22%, while Nifty Financial Services advanced 2.57%. Their gains were considerably stronger than those recorded by most other sectors.
Consumer durables and pharmaceutical shares also performed well. The Nifty Consumer Durables index rose 1.70%, while Nifty Pharma gained 1.21%. Automobile, FMCG, metal and technology stocks finished with more modest advances.

Energy and media shares were the exceptions. Nifty Energy slipped marginally, while Nifty Media recorded the sharpest sectoral decline.
| Market indicator | Closing performance |
|---|---|
| Nifty Realty | +0.09% |
| Nifty Metal | +0.66% |
| Nifty IT | +0.43% |
| Nifty FMCG | +0.67% |
| Nifty Auto | +0.76% |

| Nifty Consumer Durables | +1.70% |
| Nifty Pharma | +1.21% |
| Nifty PSU Bank | +0.60% |
| Nifty Financial Services | +2.57% |
| Nifty Private Bank | +3.22% |
| Brent crude | Below $100 per barrel |
| Indian rupee | ₹93.89 per US dollar (up 52 paise) |
| Japan Nikkei 225 | -5.96% |
| South Korea Kospi | -6.02% |
| Hong Kong Hang Seng | About -1.1% |
The strength of Indian benchmarks stood in sharp contrast to the performance of other Asian markets. Japan’s Nikkei 225 plunged 5.96%, while South Korea’s Kospi dropped 6.02%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also finished lower, declining approximately 1.1%.
The regional weakness followed a selloff in Wall Street’s artificial intelligence-related stocks, which weighed heavily on technology shares across Asia. Indian equities moved against that trend, supported by strong gains in domestic banking and financial services companies.
The currency market provided another notable development. The Indian rupee strengthened by 52 paise to close at ₹93.89 against the US dollar. Brent crude remained below $100 per barrel, providing a relatively softer oil-price backdrop for the session.
Despite the strong gains in the benchmarks, the rise in India VIX showed that market volatility remained elevated. The simultaneous increase in stock prices and expected volatility suggested that Friday’s session was not entirely free of uncertainty.
The most significant development was the Nifty’s return above 25,000 after more than eight months. Its close at the day’s high, alongside the Sensex’s finish above 81,000, marked another major advance in the market’s seven-session recovery.
Yet the divergence between large-cap and smaller-company stocks remained important. Forty-six Nifty constituents advanced, but the broader NSE recorded substantially more declining stocks than gainers. Midcaps finished almost flat, while smallcaps lost ground.
Friday therefore ended with a powerful rally in India’s benchmark indices, led by banks and financial companies, even as the wider market struggled and major Asian exchanges recorded steep losses.
