Sensex, Nifty Closing Today, October 27, 2026: Sensex Ends Flat, Nifty Below 22,750 as IT and Banking Stocks Weigh

Indian equity markets ended Tuesday, October 27, 2026, almost unchanged as losses in banking and information technology stocks offset gains across pharmaceuticals, automobiles and several other sectors. Investors remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy decision, while elevated crude oil prices continued to raise concerns about inflation, corporate earnings and India’s import costs.

The BSE Sensex declined 8.08 points, or 0.01%, to close at 73,598.67, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 3.45 points, or 0.02%, to settle at 22,749.75. Both indices retained most of Monday’s recovery but struggled to extend their gains as heavyweight financial and technology companies came under selling pressure.

Despite the subdued benchmark performance, the broader market presented a stronger picture. Mid-cap and small-cap shares advanced sharply, while most major sectors finished higher. The divergence highlighted selective investor demand for companies reporting encouraging quarterly earnings.

Sensex and Nifty End Almost Unchanged After Volatile Trading

Tuesday’s session began cautiously, with benchmark indices opening lower as investors assessed international market developments and persistent concerns about crude oil prices. The indices recovered during parts of the trading session but subsequently surrendered their gains as selling pressure returned to major banking and technology stocks. The Nifty finished just below the psychological 22,750 level, while the Sensex remained close to its previous closing level.

Indian benchmark closing levels, October 27, 2026

Index Closing level Day change
BSE Sensex 73,598.67 −8.08 (−0.01%)
NSE Nifty 50 22,749.75 −3.45 (−0.02%)

Monday’s session had delivered a substantial rebound, with the Sensex gaining 482.92 points and the Nifty advancing 153.20 points. Tuesday’s narrow declines therefore represented a pause following that recovery rather than another broad-based selloff. The trading pattern showed that investors remained willing to buy selected stocks, particularly those supported by corporate earnings, while exercising caution toward major index constituents.

Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Stocks Outperform Benchmark Indices

One of Tuesday’s most significant developments was the strong performance of smaller companies. Small-cap stocks gained approximately 2.7%, while mid-cap shares advanced around 1%, substantially outperforming the Sensex and Nifty.

The gains reflected buying in companies that had reported encouraging quarterly earnings, alongside renewed interest in selected defence-related businesses. Automobile-component manufacturer Sona BLW Precision Forgings, electric two-wheeler company Ather Energy and pharmaceutical company Mankind Pharma were among the stocks attracting attention following earnings-related developments.

This divergence also illustrated the effect of index concentration. The Sensex and Nifty are weighted toward large companies, meaning losses in major banks and technology stocks can offset gains across numerous smaller businesses.

Twelve Major Sectors Advance; Financials and IT Lag

Sectoral performance was considerably stronger than the benchmark closing figures suggested. Twelve of the 16 major sectors finished higher, with automobile and pharmaceutical stocks among the notable gainers. Pharmaceutical companies benefited from encouraging earnings developments, while automobile and auto-component stocks attracted buying as investors assessed quarterly financial performance and business prospects.

Financial services and information technology shares moved in the opposite direction, limiting gains in the broader benchmark indices. Technology stocks remained sensitive to expectations for international business demand and corporate growth, while banking shares faced selling pressure as investors assessed earnings, credit conditions and the interest-rate outlook.

Banking Stocks Decline as SBI and Axis Bank Weigh on Sentiment

Banking stocks were among Tuesday’s weaker performers, contributing to the subdued closing performance of the benchmark indices. State Bank of India declined approximately 1.6%, while Axis Bank fell 1.53%. ICICI Bank also ended lower.

Banking shares carry substantial weight in India’s benchmark indices, making their performance especially important for the direction of the Sensex and Nifty. Financial-sector sentiment remained sensitive to the outlook for interest rates, credit growth, borrowing costs and corporate earnings.

Top Stock Movers: Tata Consumer and Bharti Airtel Gain

Tata Consumer Products was among Tuesday’s standout performers, climbing approximately 6.8% following stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings. The company’s results attracted investor interest as demand for its packaged food and beverage products supported its financial performance.

Bharti Airtel led the Sensex gainers, advancing approximately 3.18%. Trent and Maruti Suzuki also finished higher, gaining around 2.4% and 2.3%, respectively. The advance in Maruti Suzuki coincided with broader strength across automobile shares.

Outside the benchmark indices, Sona BLW Precision Forgings attracted attention after reporting growth in quarterly revenue and profit. Ather Energy and Mankind Pharma also participated in the earnings-driven activity across the broader market.

On the losing side, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services and Asian Paints were among the notable Sensex decliners. TCS fell approximately 1.42%, while Asian Paints declined around 1.40%.

FII and DII Activity: Domestic Buying Offsets Foreign Selling

Institutional investment flows remained an important influence on Indian market sentiment. The latest reported provisional cash-market figures, covering Monday, October 26, showed foreign institutional selling alongside continued buying by domestic institutions.

Institutional flows, October 26, 2026

Institutional investors Trading date Net activity
Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) October 26, 2026 −₹1,462.49 crore
Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) October 26, 2026 +₹2,609.57 crore

Domestic institutional purchases exceeded foreign institutional sales during Monday’s session, helping support demand for Indian equities. For October through October 26, foreign institutional investors recorded cumulative net cash-market sales of approximately ₹52,929 crore, while domestic institutional investors registered net purchases of approximately ₹61,720 crore. The contrasting flows highlighted the importance of domestic investment in cushioning the impact of overseas selling.

Crude Oil Near $116 Keeps Inflation Concerns in Focus

International crude oil prices remained a major concern for Indian investors on Tuesday. Brent crude traded near $116 per barrel during the international session, remaining close to a six-month high as attacks affecting Saudi Arabia and continuing tensions in the Middle East raised concerns about potential supply disruptions.

The elevated price of crude oil has important implications for India because the country depends heavily on imported petroleum. Sustained high oil prices can increase the import bill, add pressure to inflation and raise operating expenses for companies dependent on fuel and petroleum-based raw materials. Industries such as aviation, logistics, chemicals and paints are particularly sensitive to higher energy costs.

Rupee and Global Monetary Policy Remain in Focus

Currency movements continued to attract attention as elevated crude oil prices increased concerns about India’s external payments. The rupee had closed at approximately ₹95.19 against the US dollar on Monday, October 26, compared with ₹94.94 in the preceding session. Higher oil prices can increase demand for dollars from Indian importers, while foreign institutional selling can add pressure on the currency.

Investors were also preparing for the US Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy announcement scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Market expectations pointed toward unchanged US interest rates, with particular attention on the central bank’s assessment of inflation and its guidance for future policy decisions. A restrictive monetary-policy outlook could influence US Treasury yields, the dollar and investment flows into emerging markets.

Asian Markets Gain as Technology Shares Attract Buying

Asian equity markets generally performed positively on Tuesday, supported by renewed interest in technology and semiconductor companies. Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi advanced as investors responded to developments in artificial intelligence and technology-related industries. The stronger regional performance contrasted with the muted closing figures for India’s benchmark indices.

What to Watch on Wednesday, October 28

The Nifty’s close at 22,749.75 leaves the benchmark almost unchanged from Monday’s level of 22,753.20. The index has retained most of its recent recovery, but selling in heavyweight financial and technology companies has prevented a stronger advance.

Investors will monitor fresh quarterly earnings, institutional investment flows, crude oil prices, currency movements and international equity-market developments. The Federal Reserve’s policy announcement will be particularly important for global sentiment, especially if policymakers indicate that inflation risks could keep interest rates elevated.

Tuesday’s market performance offered a mixed signal. The Sensex and Nifty ended slightly lower, yet gains across 12 major sectors and strong advances in mid-cap and small-cap shares demonstrated that buying interest remained active. The challenge for Indian equities continues to be the combination of expensive crude oil, persistent foreign institutional outflows and uncertainty surrounding global monetary policy.
