Sensex, Nifty Closing Today, October 28, 2026: Sensex Falls 353 Points as IT and Oil Stocks Drag Markets Lower

OneTrader | Indian Stock Market Closing Report | Wednesday, October 28, 2026

Indian equity markets ended Wednesday, October 28, 2026, lower as selling in information technology and oil and gas stocks outweighed gains in banking, automobiles and pharmaceuticals. Elevated crude oil prices and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy announcement weighed on sentiment, although buying at lower levels helped benchmark indices recover substantially from their intraday lows.

The BSE Sensex declined 352.64 points, or 0.48%, to close at 73,246.03, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 50.90 points, or 0.22%, to settle at 22,698.85. In contrast, the Bank Nifty advanced 292.50 points, or 0.54%, to finish at 54,267.40, supported by gains in major banking stocks.

The broader market outperformed the benchmark indices, with mid-cap and small-cap shares recording gains. Wednesday’s session highlighted a divergence between sectors as investors responded to corporate earnings, major company announcements and international economic developments.

Sensex and Nifty Recover Sharply From Intraday Lows

Wednesday’s trading session was marked by considerable volatility as selling in heavyweight technology and energy companies pushed the benchmark indices sharply lower during the morning.

The Sensex touched an intraday low of 72,603.57 before recovering approximately 642 points to finish at 73,246.03. Similarly, the Nifty declined to 22,497.70 before recovering approximately 201 points to close at 22,698.85.

The recovery reflected renewed buying interest in selected companies, particularly those in banking, engineering, automobiles and pharmaceuticals.

Indian Stock Market Closing Levels — October 28, 2026

Index Closing level Day change
BSE Sensex 73,246.03 −352.64 (−0.48%)
NSE Nifty 50 22,698.85 −50.90 (−0.22%)
Nifty Bank 54,267.40 +292.50 (+0.54%)

The Nifty’s decline below 22,700 contrasted with the improvement in banking shares, illustrating how selling in a relatively small number of heavyweight companies influenced the broader benchmarks.

The recovery from intraday lows also demonstrated that investors remained willing to purchase selected stocks despite concerns about international financial conditions.

IT and Oil & Gas Stocks Lead Sectoral Losses

Information technology and oil and gas stocks were the principal contributors to Wednesday’s market weakness.

The Nifty IT index declined 1.98%, reflecting selling across major software exporters. Infosys fell 3.34%, while Tata Consultancy Services declined 1.68%, Tech Mahindra lost 1.83% and HCL Technologies slipped 1.13%.

Indian IT companies generate substantial revenue from international clients, particularly in the United States. Expectations surrounding US interest rates, corporate technology spending and global economic growth therefore remain important influences on sector valuations.

The Nifty Oil & Gas index fell 2.27%, adding pressure to the benchmark indices.

Reliance Industries and ONGC were among the notable Nifty losers, while elevated crude oil prices continued to influence sentiment toward energy-related companies.

Other sectors also faced selling pressure. The Nifty FMCG index declined approximately 0.56%, while real estate and metal stocks finished lower.

The sectoral weakness reflected concerns about energy costs, corporate profitability and the possibility of restrictive international monetary conditions.

Banking, Auto and Pharma Stocks Provide Support

While IT and energy stocks declined, several other sectors attracted buying interest.

The Nifty Auto index gained 1.45%, while the Nifty Pharma index advanced 1.04%. Media stocks also performed strongly, rising approximately 1.38%.

Financial services and private banking stocks recorded gains of approximately 0.45% and 0.35%, respectively.

Bank Nifty’s 0.54% advance was particularly significant because banking stocks had faced selling pressure during the previous session.

State Bank of India gained approximately 1.23%, while Axis Bank advanced 1.14% and HDFC Bank rose 0.87%.

Buying in these major lenders helped cushion the impact of declines in technology and energy shares.

The sectoral divergence indicated that investors were responding selectively to earnings developments and company-specific fundamentals rather than reducing exposure across the entire market.

Top Stock Movers: L&T Rallies on Earnings, Infosys Declines

Larsen & Toubro emerged as one of Wednesday’s prominent gainers, advancing approximately 3.7% after reporting strong September-quarter financial results.

The engineering and infrastructure company reported a 32.5% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹5,202.10 crore, while revenue rose 16% to ₹78,750 crore.

New order inflows increased 28% to ₹1,47,665 crore, taking the company’s outstanding order book to approximately ₹8.54 lakh crore at the end of September 2026.

International orders accounted for 63% of the quarter’s order inflows, highlighting the company’s substantial overseas project exposure.

The results demonstrated continued demand for engineering and infrastructure projects despite concerns about execution costs and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Apollo Hospitals was among the leading Nifty gainers, while Trent advanced approximately 2.79%. SBI Life Insurance and InterGlobe Aviation also featured among the stronger performers.

Infosys was among the weakest major stocks, declining 3.34%. Reliance Industries, ONGC, HCL Technologies and Bharti Airtel also featured among the notable Nifty losers.

Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Stocks Outperform

Broader-market indices performed better than the Sensex and Nifty on Wednesday.

The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.43%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 0.90%.

The Nifty Midcap 50 also rose approximately 0.54%, indicating buying interest across selected smaller companies.

In contrast, the Nifty 100, Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 ended marginally lower.

India VIX, which measures expectations of near-term market volatility, declined approximately 0.25% to 16.36.

The combination of stronger smaller-company performance and a lower volatility reading suggested that selling pressure was concentrated in particular heavyweight sectors rather than extending uniformly across the market.

FII and DII Activity: Foreign Investors Return to Buying

Institutional investment activity remained an important influence on market sentiment as foreign investors returned to net buying in Indian equities.

The latest provisional cash-market figures for Tuesday, October 27, 2026, showed foreign institutional investors recording substantial net purchases, while domestic institutional investors were net sellers.

Institutional investors Trading date Net activity
Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) October 27, 2026 +₹4,240.39 crore
Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) October 27, 2026 −₹1,250.03 crore

Foreign investors’ purchases represented a reversal from Monday’s selling, when they had recorded net sales of ₹1,462.49 crore.

The change in institutional activity came amid ongoing reassessment of Indian equity valuations, corporate earnings and international economic conditions.

Domestic institutions, meanwhile, recorded net selling after providing substantial buying support during earlier sessions.

The contrast between foreign and domestic flows highlighted the changing composition of demand in the Indian equity market.

Institutional flows remain important because large purchases or sales can influence liquidity, particularly in heavyweight banking, technology and energy stocks.

Crude Oil Above $114 Remains a Major Concern

International crude oil prices continued to influence Indian equities on Wednesday as concerns about energy supply disruptions persisted.

Brent crude traded around $114.45 per barrel, up approximately 0.50%, while West Texas Intermediate crude rose 1.21% to $101.11 per barrel during the international session.

Oil prices remained elevated amid concerns about supply disruptions following attacks affecting Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure.

For India, high crude oil prices present an important economic challenge because the country depends heavily on imported petroleum.

Sustained increases in energy prices can raise the import bill, increase transportation and manufacturing expenses, and contribute to inflationary pressure.

Higher crude prices can also affect corporate profit margins, particularly in aviation, chemicals, paints, logistics and other energy-intensive industries.

The energy-price environment has become especially important for investors because it influences both inflation expectations and the outlook for monetary policy.

Although selected automobile, banking and pharmaceutical companies attracted buying on Wednesday, expensive crude oil remained a significant source of uncertainty for the broader market.

The public offering raised approximately ₹30,213 crore, attracting considerable investor attention.

The company’s shares subsequently touched an intraday high of ₹1,419, reflecting strong initial investor interest.

Jio Platforms operates across telecommunications, broadband connectivity and digital services, making its listing an important development for India’s technology and communications industries.

The debut also highlighted continued investor appetite for large public offerings despite volatility in benchmark indices and uncertainty surrounding international energy markets.

Rupee, RBI and Global Monetary Policy Remain in Focus

Currency movements continued to influence market sentiment as elevated crude oil prices increased concerns about India’s external payments and inflation outlook.

The Indian rupee had closed near ₹95.11 against the US dollar on Tuesday, October 27, strengthening modestly from approximately ₹95.19 in the preceding session.

Higher crude oil prices can increase demand for dollars among Indian importers, while foreign portfolio investment flows can influence the currency’s direction.

The Reserve Bank of India’s monetary-policy outlook remains important because persistent inflationary pressure can affect borrowing costs, business investment and consumer demand.

Internationally, investors were preparing for the US Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy announcement scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

The decision is particularly important for global financial markets because US interest-rate expectations influence Treasury yields, the dollar and international capital flows.

Investors will closely examine the Federal Reserve’s assessment of inflation and its guidance concerning the future direction of monetary policy.

A restrictive interest-rate outlook could affect emerging-market currencies and equity valuations, while greater clarity about the policy trajectory could help reduce uncertainty.

For Indian markets, the interaction between crude oil prices, global borrowing costs and foreign portfolio flows remains a major factor shaping sentiment.

Nifty Outlook for Thursday, October 29

The Nifty’s close at 22,698.85 leaves the benchmark slightly below the psychologically important 22,700 level.

The index recovered substantially from its intraday low of 22,497.70, demonstrating buying interest at lower levels. However, weakness in information technology and oil and gas stocks prevented a positive closing.

The 22,600–22,700 region remains an important short-term reference area, while a recovery above 22,750 could bring the 22,800 level back into focus.

These are observational market reference levels rather than guaranteed support or resistance.

Thursday’s trading will be influenced by the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement, corporate earnings, crude oil prices, currency movements and institutional investment activity.

The strong performance of banking, automobile and pharmaceutical shares provided some stability during Wednesday’s decline, while gains in mid-cap and small-cap companies demonstrated continued selective buying interest.

Larsen & Toubro’s earnings-driven advance and the strong market debut of Jio Platforms also highlighted investor interest in businesses with substantial operating scale and long-term growth opportunities.

Nevertheless, elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty about global interest rates remain important challenges for Indian equities.

Wednesday’s session ended with benchmark losses, but the recovery from intraday lows and strength across several domestic sectors indicated that investors remained selective rather than uniformly bearish.

The next few sessions will help determine whether buying in banks, automobiles and pharmaceuticals can offset continued pressure on technology and energy stocks.
