Wall Street Futures Mixed as Banking Earnings Take Centre Stage
US stock futures were mixed on Tuesday, October 13, as investors assessed the first major wave of third-quarter corporate earnings while semiconductor stocks continued to face selling pressure. Results from JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup placed the financial sector at the centre of attention, alongside healthcare earnings and upcoming US inflation data.
In early pre-market trading, S&P 500 futures declined approximately 0.1%, Dow Jones futures gained around 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures fell roughly 0.6%. The weakness in technology contrasted with a relatively firmer performance among financial shares. Elevated government bond yields, geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding inflation remained important influences on market sentiment.
Goldman Sachs Reports Strong Third-Quarter Earnings
Goldman Sachs (GS) reported third-quarter earnings of $17.01 per share on revenue of approximately $18.68 billion, exceeding market expectations. The investment bank benefited from stronger activity across its global banking and markets operations, where revenue increased 32%.
The results highlighted the contribution of investment banking and trading operations to Goldman’s quarterly performance. Corporate financing, securities trading and advisory activity remain important indicators of business confidence and capital market conditions.

Goldman Sachs shares advanced more than 3% in pre-market trading following the announcement. The company had scheduled its quarterly earnings release for approximately 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by an investor conference call at 9:30 a.m.
JPMorgan Chase Earnings Fall Short of Analyst Expectations
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) reported third-quarter earnings of $5.75 per share, compared with analyst expectations of approximately $5.93. Quarterly revenue reached approximately $50.9 billion, below consensus expectations of around $51.23 billion.
Despite the earnings shortfall relative to forecasts, JPMorgan shares gained approximately 1.4% in early pre-market trading. The results attracted attention because the bank operates across consumer lending, corporate banking, investment banking and global financial markets.
Investors are examining the performance of these businesses for evidence of changes in credit demand, trading activity and borrowing conditions. JPMorgan’s quarterly results also provide an early reference point for assessing the financial performance of other major US banks.

Wells Fargo and Citigroup Add to Banking Earnings Coverage
Wells Fargo (WFC) reported earnings of $1.87 per share on quarterly revenue of approximately $21.87 billion. Revenue fell below analyst expectations of approximately $22.31 billion, although earnings per share were slightly ahead of forecasts.
The bank’s performance remains closely connected to lending operations, deposit funding costs and credit quality. These factors are particularly relevant as financial institutions operate in an environment of elevated borrowing costs.
Citigroup (C) was also scheduled to release third-quarter results before Tuesday’s opening bell. The reporting calendar places four major American banks in focus during the same session, offering a broad view of financial-sector conditions.
UnitedHealth Raises Its 2026 Earnings Outlook
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) reported third-quarter revenue of $112.7 billion and adjusted earnings of $4.69 per share, exceeding analyst expectations of approximately $4.14. The company raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to at least $20.50 per share.

UnitedHealth reported operating earnings of $6.6 billion and a medical cost ratio of 88.4%. Improved medical cost management and operational performance supported the revised outlook. Shares advanced in pre-market trading as investors assessed the results. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) also reported quarterly earnings on Tuesday, adding to the healthcare sector’s busy reporting calendar.
Micron and Nvidia Decline as Semiconductor Stocks Face Pressure
Micron Technology (MU) declined approximately 3% in pre-market trading as semiconductor shares extended losses from the previous session. Nvidia (NVDA), Broadcom (AVGO) and Qualcomm (QCOM) also fell around 1%.
The weakness coincided with concerns about competition from Chinese memory manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies. Selling pressure extended into Asian technology markets, where South Korea’s Kospi index declined approximately 5.5%.
The developments highlight the sensitivity of semiconductor valuations to technological competition, memory pricing and expectations for artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.

Visa Receives Preliminary Approval for China Payments Operations
Visa (V) announced that China’s central bank had approved its application to begin preparations for establishing a domestic bankcard clearing business.
The authorization represents an initial regulatory step rather than permission to begin full domestic operations. Visa must complete additional requirements before launching its planned clearing activities. The announcement attracted attention because China’s domestic payments market has historically been dominated by established local providers.
