Indian equity markets reversed their two-session recovery on October 7 after the Reserve Bank of India raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its monetary policy stance to “calibrated tightening.” The Nifty 50 declined 173.05 points, or 0.76%, to 22,603.05, while the Sensex fell 429.11 points, or 0.59%, to 72,638.70. The RBI’s first rate hike since February 2023, along with elevated crude oil prices, global bond yields and geopolitical concerns, weighed on sentiment. The central bank also raised its FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.1% while increasing its inflation projection to 5.2%, leaving investors focused on the impact of tighter monetary conditions on growth and corporate earnings.
