Copper Prices Fall as AI Demand Concerns Clash With Tight Supply in China

November 8, 2026

Copper has emerged as one of the most closely watched industrial commodities in global markets, with prices caught between concerns over artificial intelligence infrastructure spending and increasingly tight physical supplies in Asia. The metal suffered another decline during Friday’s trading session, extending its weekly losses even as buyers in China competed for available cargoes.

The latest weakness follows a remarkable rally earlier in the year, when expectations of expanding data centre investment, electricity grid upgrades and growing demand for industrial metals helped push copper prices to record highs. Those expectations are now facing a more complicated political and economic environment.

Investors are reassessing the pace of American data centre construction following the US midterm elections, while uncertainty surrounding proposed import tariffs has created additional pressure. At the same time, the physical copper market in China is showing signs of tightness, creating a sharp contrast between falling futures prices and strong demand for immediately available metal.

In simple words: Copper prices have fallen because investors are questioning how quickly AI infrastructure demand will grow. However, physical copper supplies remain tight in parts of Asia, showing that financial market sentiment and actual metal availability can move in different directions.

Copper Records Another Weekly Decline

Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange weakened on Friday as selling pressure spread across industrial metals. The decline reflected growing caution about technology infrastructure investment and the possibility of changes to American trade policy.

The weekly retreat is significant because copper has been one of the major beneficiaries of expectations surrounding artificial intelligence investment. Data centres require extensive electrical infrastructure, including power cables, transformers, cooling equipment and connections to electricity grids.

A reduction in expected data centre construction would therefore influence projections for future copper consumption.

However, the relationship between technology investment and copper demand is not immediate. Large infrastructure projects typically involve lengthy construction schedules, equipment procurement and grid connection requirements. Changes in investor expectations can affect futures prices long before physical demand changes.

US Political Developments Put AI Infrastructure Demand Under Scrutiny

The latest pressure on copper follows the Democratic Party’s strong performance in the US midterm elections. Investors are considering whether the political shift could lead to greater scrutiny of data centre development, particularly projects requiring substantial electricity and water resources.

Concerns about local infrastructure capacity, environmental approvals and electricity costs have become increasingly relevant as technology companies expand their computing facilities.

For copper markets, the issue is not whether artificial intelligence requires additional electrical infrastructure. It is whether investment will proceed at the pace previously anticipated.

A slower construction cycle could reduce the speed at which copper demand expands, particularly in the United States. Nevertheless, electricity transmission, renewable energy installations, manufacturing and conventional construction remain important sources of global consumption.

Copper’s industrial demand is spread across several sectors, making its long-term outlook broader than developments in any single technology industry.

China Faces Tight Copper Supplies Despite Falling Prices

While international futures markets have weakened, physical copper availability in parts of Asia remains constrained.

Global commodity trader Trafigura has been purchasing additional copper to increase sales into Asian markets as local supplies tighten. The competition for available material has pushed regional spot premiums to unusually elevated levels.

This creates an important distinction between the price of copper futures and the premium buyers are prepared to pay for physical delivery.

A futures contract reflects expectations about prices at a particular delivery date. A physical premium reflects the immediate cost of obtaining metal at a specific location, taking account of availability, transportation and local demand.

Strong physical premiums can therefore coexist with declining benchmark futures prices.

China remains central to this relationship because its manufacturing industries, electricity infrastructure and construction sector account for a substantial share of global copper consumption.

US Copper Tariff Expectations Add Another Complication

American trade policy is creating a separate source of uncertainty.

Earlier expectations of substantial tariffs on refined copper imports encouraged traders to move large quantities of metal into US warehouses. That shift changed the geographical distribution of copper inventories and contributed to differences between regional prices.

Following the midterm election results, investors have begun reassessing the likelihood and scope of proposed tariff measures.

If expectations of additional tariffs weaken, some of the premium associated with holding copper in the United States could decline. That would affect trading incentives and potentially alter how inventories move between markets.

However, the US administration retains executive powers over certain trade measures, meaning the direction of copper policy remains an important consideration for international suppliers and industrial buyers.

What the Copper Market Means for India

India’s copper industry is closely connected to international metal prices because domestic manufacturers, fabricators and commodity market participants use global benchmarks when assessing raw material costs.

Copper is essential for electrical cables, transformers, motors, renewable energy equipment, construction and industrial machinery. India’s expanding electricity network and manufacturing capacity make the metal particularly important for long-term infrastructure development.

MCX copper futures are influenced by international benchmark prices, currency movements and domestic trading conditions. A decline in London copper prices can influence Indian futures, although changes in the rupee-dollar exchange rate may affect the extent of that movement.

For Indian manufacturers, lower copper prices can reduce input costs. For producers and metal suppliers, the same decline can affect selling prices and inventory valuations.

Physical Supply and Industrial Demand Remain the Key Factors

Copper’s latest correction illustrates how quickly financial expectations can change even when physical supply conditions remain relatively tight.

The coming sessions will place greater attention on Chinese spot premiums, warehouse inventories, American trade policy and developments in technology infrastructure spending.

The broader copper market remains shaped by competing forces. Electrification and infrastructure investment support long-term consumption, while economic uncertainty, political decisions and changes in industrial activity can create substantial short-term price volatility.

For India, the relationship between international copper prices, domestic industrial demand and currency movements will remain particularly important as the country’s electrical and manufacturing infrastructure expands.
