Sensex Nifty closing today: how the session played out
Both indices opened higher but reversed during the day. The Nifty touched an intraday low of 22,304.45, while the Sensex dipped to about 71,676. Elevated US bond yields, continued foreign selling and uncertainty around oil prices weighed on large-cap stocks.
Our midday report on the Sensex and Nifty noted that the benchmarks were hovering near Friday’s levels; the afternoon weakness pushed them lower into the close.
Sector and stock movers
FMCG and public sector bank indices were among the weakest groups, falling about 1.7 percent and 1.2 percent respectively. Media stocks gained sharply, with the index rising about 4.6 percent, while auto and realty indices also ended higher.

Rupee jumps after RBI measures
The rupee closed at 95.78 per US dollar, up 95 paise from the previous level of 96.73. It was the biggest one-day gain since early April. The move followed measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India over the weekend, including a special dollar-supply arrangement for state-run oil marketing companies and tighter rules on forex derivative positions without underlying exposure.
Lower dollar demand from oil importers eases pressure on the currency. The RBI’s earlier liquidity steps, including a bond sale and a change in cash reserve rules, are explained in our note on RBI liquidity measures. Provisional foreign institutional investor figures for Friday showed net selling of Rs 3,568.90 crore, against domestic institutional buying of Rs 4,743.26 crore.
