Sensex, Nifty Today, October 23: IT Gains Fail to Prevent Broad Market Decline

Onetrader | India Midday Market Update | Friday, October 23, 2026

Indian equity markets gave up their early gains on Friday, October 23, 2026, extending their losing streak to a fourth consecutive session. Technology shares provided some support, but selling across most other sectors prevented the Sensex and Nifty from sustaining their positive opening.

At 10:13 AM IST, the Nifty 50 was trading at 22,529.15, down 0.70%, while the BSE Sensex stood at 72,964.13, down 0.39%. Both indices had opened higher before reversing direction.

The latest decline followed three sessions in which the benchmark indices had collectively lost approximately 2%. The continued weakness reflected concerns about elevated energy prices, international market volatility and the outlook for corporate profitability.

IT Stocks Outperform Despite Global Technology Weakness

Information technology shares were among the few areas of relative strength during Friday’s morning session.

The Nifty IT index gained approximately 1% in the 10:13 AM market snapshot, even as most other major sectors declined.

The positive performance followed a sharp sell-off in US technology shares overnight. The Nasdaq Composite had declined more than 2%, while Meta Platforms fell nearly 8% following concerns about the company’s substantial spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

Indian IT services companies have a different business model from technology companies investing heavily in data centres and semiconductor infrastructure. Software exporters may benefit from demand for AI consulting, systems integration and managed services without requiring comparable levels of capital investment.

However, their performance remains dependent on technology spending by international clients, particularly in the United States and Europe.

The relative strength of Indian IT shares therefore did not mean that the sector was insulated from global uncertainty. It demonstrated that investors were distinguishing between different types of technology businesses.

Selling Spreads Across Most Major Sectors

The broader market remained considerably weaker than the headline indices suggested.

By the reported morning snapshot, 15 of the 16 major sectors were trading lower. Smallcap stocks declined approximately 3.4%, while midcap shares lost around 2.5%.

The sharper decline in smaller companies indicated that selling pressure extended well beyond the largest benchmark constituents.

This divergence is important because the Sensex and Nifty are weighted toward large companies. Gains in a limited number of heavyweight stocks can reduce headline index losses even when a substantial portion of the wider market is declining.

For investors, the breadth of market participation provides useful context alongside benchmark movements. Widespread selling can indicate caution across different industries, rather than weakness caused by a single company or sector.

Cyient Rises After Quarterly Results

Cyient was among the notable gainers on Friday, rising approximately 7.5% in Reuters’ morning market report after announcing its quarterly financial results.

The engineering and technology services company’s revenue increased 25.5% year-on-year to approximately ₹2,235 crore for the September quarter, while consolidated net profit declined 7.3% to about ₹132.5 crore.

The contrasting movements in revenue and profit demonstrate why investors need to examine margins and business performance alongside headline sales growth.

The stock’s positive reaction also showed that individual companies could attract buying interest despite weakness across the broader market.

Colgate-Palmolive India Declines Following Earnings

Colgate-Palmolive India shares declined approximately 4.6% during morning trading, even after the company reported an increase in quarterly profit.

For the quarter ended September 30, the company reported net profit of approximately ₹342 crore, compared with ₹328 crore a year earlier. Revenue also increased, supported by demand for its toothpaste portfolio.

However, the share-price decline reflected investor concerns about the company’s growth outlook.

The reaction illustrates that positive earnings growth does not necessarily lead to a higher share price when investors are evaluating future business prospects.

Infosys and Major Corporate Earnings Remain in Focus

Several large companies were scheduled to announce their September-quarter financial results on Friday, October 23.

Infosys confirmed through its official investor-relations website that its second-quarter results would be announced on October 23, with management commentary scheduled for 4:30 PM IST and an earnings conference call at 6 PM IST.

Other companies on the day’s earnings calendar included JSW Steel, IndusInd Bank, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Shriram Finance and Bharat Petroleum Corporation.

For technology companies, investors will be watching demand trends, operating margins and management guidance. Financial companies will be assessed on lending performance, funding costs and asset quality, while industrial businesses will face scrutiny over profitability and input costs.

These announcements were still scheduled events at the time of this article’s market snapshot. No unpublished earnings figures or management statements have been included.

What Investors Should Watch During the Afternoon

The most important indicator for the remainder of Friday’s session is whether the weakness in midcap and smallcap shares begins to ease.

Technology stocks provided selective support during the morning, but the decline across most other sectors showed that buying remained narrow.

Investors should also monitor the response to newly announced quarterly earnings and whether heavyweight stocks can stabilise the benchmark indices.

The market levels quoted in this report are from 10:13 AM IST. They are not live afternoon quotations or final closing figures.

Conclusion

Indian equities remained under pressure on October 23 despite early buying in technology shares. The Sensex and Nifty reversed their opening gains, while selling across most major sectors and smaller companies highlighted cautious investor sentiment.

Company-specific developments created contrasting share-price reactions. Cyient advanced following its quarterly results, while Colgate-Palmolive India declined despite reporting higher profit.

The market’s performance through the remainder of the session will depend on whether buying interest spreads beyond a limited number of stocks and whether broader market selling moderates.
