Stock Market Today, October 16, 2026: Nifty Near 23,000, Tech Mahindra Leads IT Rally as Broader Market Faces Selling Pressure

Onetrader.in | India Market Opening Update | Friday, October 16, 2026

Indian equity markets witnessed a cautious start on Friday, October 16, 2026, as investors booked profits following the previous session’s powerful recovery. While information technology stocks attracted buying interest following encouraging corporate earnings, weakness across several other sectors prevented the benchmark indices from sustaining a positive opening momentum.

The Nifty 50 hovered around the psychologically important 23,000 level during early trading, while the BSE Sensex slipped into negative territory. The divergence between IT stocks and the broader market became one of the most significant developments of the morning.

Tech Mahindra emerged as a major market mover after its September-quarter performance exceeded revenue expectations, supported by strong deal wins. Meanwhile, earnings announcements from Wipro, Persistent Systems and other listed companies encouraged investors to reassess individual businesses rather than follow a uniform market trend.

Nifty 50, Sensex and Bank Nifty: Market Opening Performance

Indian benchmark indices entered Friday’s session after recording substantial gains on Thursday, October 15. The Sensex had advanced 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to close at 74,315.61, while the Nifty 50 gained 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to finish at 22,997.35.

Friday’s opening, however, demonstrated that a strong previous session does not necessarily translate into uninterrupted buying during the following trading day.

At 9:21 AM IST, the Nifty 50 was trading at 22,986.50, marginally lower by 0.05%, while the Sensex stood at 74,182.63, down 0.19%. By 9:44 AM, the Nifty had moved to approximately 22,974.70, representing a decline of around 0.10%.

The Nifty’s movement around 23,000 deserves attention because round-number levels often influence short-term market sentiment. However, the index trading near that level does not automatically make it a technically confirmed support or resistance zone.

For a stronger recovery, investors would want to see sustained buying across multiple sectors rather than gains concentrated in a limited number of technology companies.

Indian Stock Market Breadth: Selling Pressure Extends Beyond Benchmarks

One of the most important observations from Friday’s opening was the weakness in market participation.

Thirteen of the sixteen major sectoral indices were trading lower at approximately 9:21 AM. The broader small-cap index declined around 0.2%, while the mid-cap index slipped approximately 0.3%.

This indicates that the pressure was not restricted to a few heavyweight companies. Several areas of the market experienced selling even as the Nifty IT index advanced.

Market breadth helps investors understand whether an index movement represents broad participation or is driven primarily by a small group of stocks.

When benchmark indices remain relatively stable while most sectors decline, it can suggest that strength in a few large companies is masking weakness elsewhere. Conversely, a market recovery becomes more convincing when buying expands across sectors and market capitalisations.

Friday’s early session reflected the former situation: selective strength accompanied by broader profit-taking.

Top Gaining Stocks: Tech Mahindra and IT Companies Attract Buyers

Technology stocks became the centre of attention during Friday’s morning session, supported by company-specific earnings announcements.

Tech Mahindra: Strong Revenue and Deal Wins Support Rally

Tech Mahindra emerged as one of the most prominent stocks in Friday’s session after reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly revenue.

The company reported revenue of approximately ₹16,180 crore for the September quarter, representing growth of about 3% compared with the preceding quarter. Earnings before interest and tax increased approximately 5.4% to ₹2,386 crore, while the EBIT margin improved from 14.4% to 14.7%.

The company’s new deal wins reached approximately $1.02 billion, increasing 25.4% year-on-year.

These developments are important because deal wins provide an indication of potential future revenue opportunities. However, investors must also evaluate how quickly those contracts translate into recognised revenue and whether the company can maintain operating margins during execution.

Tech Mahindra shares gained 5.52% to ₹1,741.10 in a reported 9:44 AM snapshot. A subsequent report recorded a gain of approximately 6.4%, illustrating how quickly the stock was moving during the session.

Wipro: Investors Examine Revenue Growth and Profitability

Wipro also attracted buying interest as investors assessed its September-quarter results.

The company reported consolidated net profit of approximately ₹3,200 crore, representing a 1.9% year-on-year decline, while revenue from operations increased approximately 9% to ₹24,752.7 crore.

This divergence between revenue and profit highlights an important aspect of corporate earnings analysis. Revenue growth does not necessarily guarantee equivalent growth in shareholder earnings.

Operating expenses, employee costs, pricing conditions, contract profitability and other factors can influence how much additional revenue translates into net profit.

Wipro’s early share-price strength indicated a constructive initial market response, but investors should evaluate the company’s earnings outlook alongside the reported figures.

Persistent Systems: Profit Pressure Creates a Different Market Reaction

Persistent Systems experienced selling pressure despite broader strength in several IT companies.

The stock was reported down approximately 4.59% during early trading. The company’s reported profit was affected by acquisition-related expenditure, adding complexity to the interpretation of its quarterly performance.

This difference in market reaction between Persistent Systems and Tech Mahindra demonstrates why sector-wide sentiment alone cannot explain every individual stock movement.

Investors also consider earnings expectations, margin trends, one-time expenses, valuation and management commentary when assessing corporate results.

A company can operate in a strong sector and still experience selling pressure when its results disappoint market expectations.

Top Losing Stocks: Persistent Systems Highlights Earnings-Related Selling

While several IT stocks advanced, Persistent Systems demonstrated that investors were distinguishing between companies based on their financial performance.

Persistent Systems reported consolidated revenue of approximately ₹4,663.9 crore, representing growth of 30.3% year-on-year. However, reported profit declined 25.4% to approximately ₹351.5 crore.

The company’s EBIT margin also declined from 16.3% to 15%, despite growth in operating earnings. This combination of strong revenue expansion and margin pressure provides important context for the stock’s decline.

A complete top-ten losers list for the same morning timestamp could not be independently established. Therefore, it would be misleading to identify other companies as the day’s biggest losers simply because they announced disappointing earnings.

Major Indian Corporate News Affecting Today’s Market

Reliance Industries: Quarterly Results in Focus

Reliance Industries remained one of the important heavyweight stocks to monitor, with its quarterly results scheduled for October 16.

The market will assess developments across its energy, retail and digital businesses, with particular attention to operating profitability and management’s outlook.

Also Read: Stocks to Watch Today: Oct 14 – BEL, BHEL, Tata Tech

Because Reliance carries substantial weight in benchmark indices, its share-price movement can influence the Nifty and Sensex even when broader market participation remains weak.

Jio Financial Services: Revenue Growth but Lower Profit

Jio Financial Services reported September-quarter revenue from operations of approximately ₹1,699.28 crore, an increase of 73.15% year-on-year.

However, net profit declined approximately 51% to ₹340 crore.

This contrast is important because rapid business expansion can increase revenue without producing an immediate improvement in net earnings. Investors must examine expenses, business investment and the sustainability of revenue growth before drawing conclusions about profitability.

HDFC Life: Profit and Premium Income Improve

HDFC Life reported second-quarter net profit of approximately ₹508 crore, an increase of 13.6% year-on-year. Net premium income increased around 15.7%.

The results are relevant to the insurance sector because premium growth provides insight into demand, while profitability helps assess how effectively insurers convert business expansion into earnings.

However, investors also need to consider product mix, persistency and new-business margins when evaluating insurance companies.

IRFC: Stronger Earnings and Dividend Announcement

Indian Railway Finance Corporation reported quarterly net profit of approximately ₹1,958.5 crore, growing 10.2% year-on-year.

Net interest income increased around 30.2%, while the company announced an interim dividend of ₹1.50 per share.

These results highlight the company’s financing performance, although future growth will depend on borrowing costs, lending opportunities and its ability to maintain healthy margins.

Bharat Dynamics: Major Defence Contracts

Bharat Dynamics attracted attention following defence-contract developments valued at approximately ₹4,106 crore.

Large defence orders can strengthen future revenue visibility, particularly when they involve multi-year production and delivery schedules.

However, the financial benefit depends on execution timelines, procurement requirements, manufacturing capacity and operating margins. Order value should not be confused with immediate revenue or profit.

Mankind Pharma: Expansion into Advanced Cancer Therapies

Mankind Pharma announced plans to acquire a majority stake in Belgium-based Armed Cell Therapeutics B.V. for approximately €48 million.

The transaction would provide exposure to the development of next-generation CAR-T cancer therapies.

For investors, the development represents a potential expansion into specialised biotechnology. Nevertheless, advanced therapies involve research, regulatory and commercialisation risks, meaning the investment’s long-term value will depend on successful execution.

Angel One: Strong Quarterly Profit Growth

Angel One reported consolidated net profit of approximately ₹335 crore, increasing 58.2% year-on-year.

Revenue rose approximately 18.7% to ₹1,427 crore.

The results place attention on the stockbroking business, where profitability can be influenced by trading activity, client acquisition, operating expenses and regulatory changes.

Sector-Wise Market Analysis

Friday’s opening showed a clear difference between the performance of information technology companies and the broader equity market.

Also Read: Stocks to Watch Today September 30, 2026: BSE, Wipro, KPI Green Energy & More

Information technology: The sector emerged as the strongest area in the verified early snapshot. Tech Mahindra’s earnings provided a company-specific catalyst, while Wipro and other technology shares attracted buying interest. Persistent Systems was a notable exception, reflecting company-level concerns.

Banking and financial services: Financial stocks faced pressure in the opening session. Given the importance of banking shares within the benchmark indices, sustained weakness in heavyweight financial companies could limit the market’s ability to extend its previous rally.

Mid-cap and small-cap stocks: The early declines of approximately 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively, indicated that buying was not spreading uniformly across market capitalisations.

Other sectors: Most major sectoral indices were negative during the initial session. This suggested that the market was still absorbing Thursday’s sharp advance through profit-taking and selective repositioning rather than entering a broad-based rally.

The most important distinction is that a positive sectoral performance does not mean every company within that sector is rising. Similarly, weakness in an index does not necessarily mean every constituent is declining.

What Does Friday’s Market Opening Indicate?

The first major observation is that the previous day’s strong recovery did not immediately produce sustained follow-through buying.

Thursday’s gains had raised expectations for another positive session, but Friday’s opening showed investors taking profits while responding selectively to earnings announcements.

The second observation is that corporate results have become a major influence on individual stock movements. Tech Mahindra’s revenue performance and deal wins attracted buying, whereas Persistent Systems faced selling pressure amid concerns about reported profitability and margins.

Also Read: Nifty 50 vs Global Markets: How Major Indices Performed Since September 27, 2024

The third observation is the importance of market breadth. When thirteen of sixteen major sectors decline, strength in a few technology companies should not be interpreted as evidence of a uniformly strong market.

For the remaining session, investors should monitor whether the Nifty can sustain trading around 23,000, whether banking shares recover and whether gains expand beyond the IT sector.

A meaningful improvement in market breadth would strengthen the case for a broader recovery. Continued weakness across most sectors would instead suggest that the market remains vulnerable to further profit-taking.
