US Stock Futures Rise as AI Shares Rebound; Netflix Slides Before the Open

U.S. stock futures advanced ahead of trading on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with the Nasdaq-100 leading gains. Corporate updates brought buyers back to artificial intelligence-related shares, while Netflix moved lower following a disappointing outlook. The contrast highlighted an earnings-driven market in which expectations for future growth mattered as much as the latest quarterly performance.

The positive premarket direction extended across large-cap and small-cap futures. However, the gains remained relatively modest at the index level, suggesting a selective recovery rather than an indiscriminate move into riskier assets.

Nasdaq Futures Lead the Advance

December 2026 S&P 500 futures stood at 7,777.00, up 21.75 points or 0.28%, while Nasdaq-100 futures gained 167.00 points, or 0.56%, to 29,842.25. Dow futures advanced 169 points, or 0.32%, to 52,888.00. Russell 2000 futures rose 10.60 points, or 0.38%, to 2,797.50.

These were delayed, non-simultaneous quotes. The displayed timestamps were 08:35:38 for the S&P 500, 08:44:43 for the Nasdaq-100, 08:41:16 for the Dow and 09:09:09 for the Russell 2000; the quote pages did not explicitly identify the timestamp timezone.

The Nasdaq’s stronger percentage gain indicated that technology was providing the clearest support. Nevertheless, futures describe expectations ahead of the cash session, not its eventual outcome. Earnings headlines and changes in positioning can alter that direction quickly once regular trading begins.

Super Micro Sparks Interest in AI Infrastructure

Super Micro Computer climbed 12.7% in reported premarket trading after projecting quarterly revenue and profit margins above Wall Street expectations. The update provided a positive signal for investors assessing whether spending on AI infrastructure is translating into business growth.

The distinction between sales and profitability remains important. Strong demand can support revenue, but investors also need evidence that supplying increasingly complex computing systems can produce sustainable margins. Super Micro’s outlook addressed both sides of that question, helping explain why the announcement drew attention beyond the company itself.

Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also advanced, gaining 7% and 4.8%, respectively, in reported snapshots. Their participation suggested investors were interpreting the news as relevant to the wider infrastructure market. That reaction does not mean every supplier will achieve the same results: product mix, customer concentration, pricing and execution can produce substantially different outcomes.

SpaceX Gains, but Merger Expectations Need Caution

SpaceX rose 9.2% in premarket trading following its first profit as a public company. Comments from Elon Musk about a potential combination with Tesla added another element to the market’s response.

A possible merger and a completed transaction are very different developments. Discussion of strategic benefits does not establish agreed terms, shareholder approval or a closing timetable. Investors therefore face two separate questions: how to assess the underlying business performance and how much weight to place on a transaction that remains uncertain.

That distinction matters because enthusiasm about potential synergies can move share prices before the financial and governance details become clear. Any assessment of a proposed combination would ultimately depend on its structure, valuation and implications for shareholders of both companies.

Netflix Falls as the Outlook Takes Priority

Netflix declined approximately 6.7% after its fourth-quarter profit forecast fell short of expectations. Its weakness stood out against the stronger performance of AI-linked shares and reinforced the importance of forward guidance during earnings season.

Share prices respond to the difference between expectations and new information, rather than simply whether a company remains profitable. A business can report substantial earnings and still face selling if its outlook suggests slower growth or weaker profitability than investors had anticipated.

The divergence between Netflix and infrastructure suppliers also showed why treating technology as a single trade can be misleading. Streaming subscriptions, advertising and enterprise computing have different demand drivers, competitive pressures and investment requirements.

What Matters After the Opening Bell

The central question for Wednesday’s session is whether the premarket recovery develops into sustained participation after regular trading begins. Strong moves in a few prominent companies can lift sentiment, but a more durable advance would require support beyond the initial earnings reaction.

Investors will also distinguish between company-specific improvements and evidence of broader industry strength. Better guidance from one supplier is useful information, but it cannot resolve every question about AI investment returns. For now, the premarket picture points to renewed interest in infrastructure growth alongside continued scrutiny of forecasts and profitability.
