Onetrader Daily Market Roundup | Wednesday, October 21, 2026
Indian equity markets ended lower for the second consecutive trading session on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as early gains disappeared amid rising crude oil prices, persistent foreign investor concerns and widespread selling across the broader market. Information technology stocks provided some support, but weakness in financial services, automobiles and metals kept the benchmark indices under pressure.
The BSE Sensex declined 143.21 points, or 0.19%, to close at 73,709.69, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 77.60 points, or 0.34%, to settle at 22,811.35. The Nifty finished below 22,900 despite beginning the session on a positive note.
The market’s decline reflected concerns about rising energy costs, inflation and corporate earnings, even as investors continued to assess developments in India’s trade relations and the ongoing quarterly results season.

Sensex and Nifty Closing: Weak Market Breadth Signals Caution
Wednesday’s trading session began with optimism, supported by selective buying in large-cap stocks. However, the recovery proved short-lived as selling pressure intensified during the day.
The weakness was considerably more pronounced outside the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined approximately 1.58%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 lost around 2.37%, highlighting continued pressure on smaller companies.
Market breadth was overwhelmingly negative. Of 3,698 stocks traded on the NSE, 603 advanced, 2,995 declined and 100 remained unchanged. The exchange also recorded 362 stocks touching fresh 52-week lows compared with just 44 reaching new highs.
This divergence suggests that the modest decline in the Sensex understated the selling pressure experienced across the broader market.

IT Stocks Outperform While Auto and Metal Shares Decline
Information technology emerged as the strongest major sector, with the Nifty IT index gaining approximately 2.88%. Buying interest in established software exporters helped offset weakness elsewhere in the market.
Investors continued to evaluate the quarterly performance and business outlook of Indian IT companies, particularly their ability to maintain margins and secure new projects amid changing global technology spending patterns.
Automobile and metal stocks faced selling pressure as investors reassessed demand conditions, input costs and global economic uncertainty. Financial stocks also contributed to market weakness.
The sectoral divergence highlighted a selective investment environment in which investors favoured certain export-oriented businesses while reducing exposure to more economically sensitive companies.

Top Gainers and Losers: Wipro, Infosys and Tech Mahindra Rise
Wipro gained approximately 3.38% to close at ₹188.30, while Infosys advanced 3.03% to ₹1,165. Tech Mahindra climbed 2.74% to ₹1,827.80. HCL Technologies and TCS also featured among the stronger technology performers.
On the losing side, Eternal declined approximately 3.56% to ₹308.80. Bajaj Finance fell 3.45% to ₹924.30, while Eicher Motors dropped 2.94% to ₹7,133.
The contrasting performance reinforced the importance of sector-specific earnings expectations. Technology stocks benefited from buying interest, while financial and consumption-related businesses faced greater scrutiny over valuations and future growth.
The detailed company-specific analysis of individual winners and losers will remain separate from this closing report.

FII and DII Activity: Latest Confirmed Trading-Day Data
Institutional flows remain an important indicator of market confidence, particularly as foreign selling continues to weigh on Indian equities.
The latest cash-market figures I could verify individually were for Monday, October 19, 2026. The exchange-data page indicates a later update, but its retrieved table did not expose October 21 figures, so they are not being attributed to today’s session.
| Investors | October 19 net activity |
|---|---|
| Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) | −₹1,148.64 crore |
| Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) | +₹3,201.19 crore |
Domestic institutional buying exceeded foreign selling on that trading day, demonstrating the importance of local investment flows in supporting market liquidity. However, the figures should not be interpreted as Wednesday’s institutional activity.
Rupee Strengthens Despite Rising Crude Oil Prices
The Indian rupee appreciated approximately 0.5% to close at ₹94.46 against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by foreign capital inflows linked to the Jio Platforms initial public offering.

The currency touched approximately ₹94.43 during trading, its strongest level since early September, before surrendering part of its gains as crude oil prices increased.
Jio Platforms’ approximately $3.2 billion IPO attracted strong investor demand, reportedly achieving full subscription within two hours of opening. The offering provided an important source of capital inflows at a time when broader equity markets were experiencing selling pressure.
The Reserve Bank of India’s policy outlook also remained important. Following its October 7 rate increase, investors were awaiting the latest Monetary Policy Committee meeting minutes for additional guidance on inflation and future interest-rate decisions.
Crude Oil Above $110 Raises Inflation Concerns
Brent crude futures climbed above $110 per barrel during Wednesday’s international trading session amid renewed concerns about Middle East supply disruptions.
Around the Indian market close, December Brent futures were quoted near $110.77 per barrel, while WTI futures traded around $99.94.
For India, elevated crude prices create several challenges. Higher import costs can increase pressure on inflation, widen the current-account deficit and affect the profitability of companies dependent on petroleum-based inputs.
Gold also traded lower in domestic futures markets. MCX December gold futures were quoted near ₹1,45,678 per 10 grams at approximately 3:43 PM IST, down 0.57%. These are timestamped futures quotes, not final commodity settlement prices.
Global Markets, Federal Reserve and Bitcoin
International markets remained sensitive to geopolitical developments, energy prices and expectations surrounding central-bank policy.
In the United States, investors continued assessing corporate earnings alongside inflation risks and the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision. Higher energy prices could complicate the inflation outlook and reduce the scope for monetary easing.
European markets faced uncertainty amid political developments and changing expectations for regional growth. The European Central Bank’s approach to liquidity and monetary conditions remained another factor influencing international financial markets.
Bitcoin traded around the $82,000–$83,000 region in market commentary available during Wednesday’s session. Cryptocurrency prices trade continuously, so these levels should be treated as indicative observations rather than a synchronized Indian market-closing price.
Corporate Earnings and Developments in Focus
The quarterly earnings season continued to influence individual stocks. Eternal reported approximately 92% year-on-year growth in quarterly profit to ₹125 crore, alongside revenue growth of around 78%. Despite those headline improvements, its shares declined, illustrating how market expectations can differ from reported earnings performance.

Waaree Renewable Technologies also remained under pressure after reporting weaker profitability despite revenue growth. The stock’s decline reflected concerns about margins and earnings quality within the renewable-energy sector.
Meanwhile, investors were watching results from companies including Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement and Hindustan Zinc, as well as the developing Jio Platforms IPO.
Nifty Outlook for Thursday, October 22
The Nifty’s close at 22,811.35 leaves the index close to the 22,800 region, an immediate area to monitor during the next session.
A recovery above 22,900 could indicate improving short-term buying interest, while continued weakness below 22,800 would keep attention on the next lower trading levels. These are reference areas, not guaranteed support or resistance.

The direction of crude oil prices, foreign investor flows, additional quarterly results, the rupee and overnight US market movements will be important for Thursday’s opening.
The most significant concern remains the weak market breadth. Although IT stocks performed strongly, the wider decline in mid-cap and small-cap shares suggests investors remain cautious about risk.
The broader market will need more consistent participation beyond a few heavyweight sectors before Wednesday’s weakness can be considered reversed.
