The Annual Budget Meeting That Ran Out of Snacks

Personal Finance ComedyNovember 1, 2026·The Lighter Side of Money and Markets

Every January, Neha invited her monthly budget to a serious meeting. This year she booked the dining table, printed a pie chart, and placed a bowl of snacks in the middle. The budget arrived on time. Her weekend plans showed up fifteen minutes late wearing sunglasses.

‘We need to reduce spending,’ Neha announced. ‘The numbers are getting dramatic.’ The grocery category raised its hand. ‘I buy vegetables,’ it said. ‘I also buy the vegetables that become science projects in the fridge.’ The budget wrote down “less ambitious spinach.”

Then the coffee line objected. ‘We provide morale,’ it said. ‘Without us, the whole office would hear Neha sigh at the spreadsheet.’ The budget conceded one cup a week. Coffee immediately asked whether oat milk counted as a separate department.

Neha brought up the subscription list. Three apps claimed they were essential: one tracked water, one tracked steps, and one sent reminders to use the other two. The budget cancelled the reminder app. It sent a final notification: “I understand. Please remember to drink water and walk to the cancellation page.”

The meeting ended when the snack bowl was empty. Neha wrote a new rule: every purchase must explain its purpose. Her weekend plans submitted a memo titled “Joy.” The budget approved it, subject to a reasonable limit and one shared dessert.
