Wednesday, November 4, 2026 | Indian Stock Market Closing Report
Indian stock markets finished higher for the fifth consecutive session on Wednesday, although the day’s gains were more modest than the sharp advances recorded earlier in the week. The Sensex crossed another important closing milestone, while the Nifty 50 moved closer to the 24,000 mark. The strongest performance, however, came from the broader market, where midcap and smallcap shares comfortably outpaced the benchmark indices.
The BSE Sensex closed at 77,301.40, gaining 383.55 points or 0.50%. The Nifty 50 advanced 149.75 points, or 0.63%, to settle at 23,960.60. Both indices remained in positive territory despite uneven trading, extending their winning streak to five sessions, the longest in nearly five months.
Wednesday’s trading was marked by a clear difference in sector performance. Realty, metal, media and consumer-related stocks attracted buying interest, while information technology shares struggled. Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises and Titan were among the leading Nifty gainers, while TCS and HCL Technologies finished among the weakest performers.
In Simple Words
The Sensex gained nearly 384 points and the Nifty finished just below 24,000. Smaller companies delivered stronger gains than the major indices, while technology stocks remained under selling pressure. The market closed higher for a fifth straight session.
Indian Stock Market Closing Indices, November 4, 2026
| Index | Closing level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | 77,301.40 | +383.55 (+0.50%) |
| Nifty 50 | 23,960.60 | +149.75 (+0.63%) |
| Nifty Bank | 55,913.60 | +373.55 (+0.67%) |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | 59,505.50 | +909.25 (+1.55%) |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | 19,026.40 | +373.55 (+2.00%) |
The closing figures revealed a notable shift in market participation. The Nifty and Sensex advanced at a measured pace, but the Nifty Smallcap 100 recorded a substantially stronger session, climbing to 19,026.40. The Midcap 100 also performed well, finishing above 59,500.
Bank Nifty closed higher, although its advance was relatively modest. Unlike the previous session, when consumer and banking heavyweights dominated the benchmarks, Wednesday’s gains were spread more widely across the market.

Market Breadth: Buying Spreads Across the NSE
The improvement in broader-market participation was reflected in the number of advancing stocks. Gainers substantially outnumbered decliners, while the Nifty 50 recorded positive closes in most of its constituent companies.
| Market breadth | Number of stocks |
|---|---|
| Advancing stocks | 2,948 |
| Declining stocks | 1,260 |
| Unchanged stocks | 170 |
| Nifty 50 gainers | 36 |
| Nifty 50 losers | 14 |
The breadth figures were particularly encouraging for the broader market. Smallcap stocks, which had previously experienced sharper selling pressure, attracted renewed buying interest. Midcap shares also participated strongly, making Wednesday’s advance more evenly distributed than a rally driven exclusively by large-cap companies.
Nevertheless, the gains were selective at the sector level. While most market segments advanced, technology stocks moved in the opposite direction, showing that investors were not buying every sector indiscriminately.
Top Nifty 50 Gainers Today
Bharat Electronics led Wednesday’s Nifty 50 gainers, climbing 4.71% to ₹398.00. Adani Enterprises followed closely with a 4.47% advance, while Titan gained 4.22%. Jio Financial Services and Max Healthcare also recorded strong performances.

| Bharat Electronics | ₹398.00 | +4.71% |
| Adani Enterprises | ₹2,709.20 | +4.47% |

| Japan Nikkei 225 | -1.90% |
| Hong Kong Hang Seng | +1.40% |
| China Shanghai Composite | +2.12% |
| South Korea KOSPI | +0.62% |
The decline in crude oil prices was another notable feature of the session. Brent traded near $102.50 per barrel, easing from higher levels recorded earlier in the week. The movement in oil prices accompanied a mixed session across Asian equity markets.
Japan’s Nikkei finished lower, while Hong Kong, China and South Korea recorded gains. Indian equities maintained their upward movement despite the uneven regional performance.
The most important feature of Wednesday’s closing session was the strength of the broader market. The Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 2%, while the Midcap 100 advanced 1.55%, both outperforming the Nifty 50 and Sensex.

The Nifty’s finish at 23,960.60 brought the benchmark close to the 24,000 level, while the Sensex settled above 77,300. Five consecutive positive sessions have produced a substantial recovery in the benchmark indices, but Wednesday’s figures also revealed a change in leadership, with smaller companies and domestic-facing sectors delivering stronger gains than several established technology heavyweights.
