OneTrader Market News Today — October 21, 2026

Wednesday Morning Edition | 7:42 AM IST | Indian & Global Markets

Today’s edition will focus exclusively on new, verified developments from October 20–21, excluding stories already covered in our weekend articles.

Since October 20 was a scheduled Indian market holiday, the focus is on fresh corporate announcements, overnight global developments, new economic data and events that could affect trading when Indian markets resume.

Wall Street Closes Mixed as Dow Gains Nearly 500 Points

US equity markets ended Tuesday, October 20, with mixed results as stronger corporate earnings helped offset renewed concerns about technology valuations and energy prices.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1% to close at 52,495.88, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.3% to 7,712.57. The Nasdaq Composite slipped marginally to 26,424.82, reflecting continued caution toward large technology companies.

US indexOctober 20 closeDaily change
Dow Jones52,495.88+1.0%
S&P 5007,712.57+0.3%
Nasdaq Composite26,424.82Less than -0.1%
Russell 20002,773.42+1.7%

The Russell 2000’s strong performance was particularly notable. Smaller US companies outperformed major technology stocks, suggesting investors were increasingly interested in opportunities beyond the largest AI-related businesses.

Healthcare companies also contributed to the broader market’s recovery. However, weakness in selected technology stocks prevented the Nasdaq from participating fully in the gains.

For Indian markets, the mixed US performance presents a more nuanced global backdrop. Stronger broader-market sentiment may provide some support, but investors will continue monitoring technology-sector volatility and international capital flows.

Indian Markets Resume Trading After Dussehra Holiday

The National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange are scheduled to resume regular trading on Wednesday, October 21, following Tuesday’s Dussehra holiday.

Before the holiday, Indian markets experienced a significant decline on Monday, October 19. The Sensex fell 876.37 points to 73,852.90, while the Nifty 50 declined 257.20 points to 22,888.95.

The weakness was driven by selling in private-sector banking stocks, disappointing reactions to selected corporate earnings and concerns over elevated energy prices.

Wednesday’s session will therefore be important because investors will have an opportunity to respond to international developments that occurred while domestic markets were closed.

Asian equity-market movements, currency conditions and institutional participation could influence the opening direction. However, a positive opening indication does not guarantee that gains will continue throughout the session.

Piramal Finance Reports 67% Quarterly Profit Growth

Piramal Finance emerged among the fresh corporate developments ahead of Wednesday’s trading session.

The company reported a 67% year-on-year increase in second-quarter net profit to ₹545 crore, compared with ₹327 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Net interest income increased approximately 35% to ₹1,530 crore, while assets under management expanded 24% to ₹1,13,112 crore.

The results indicate growth in the company’s lending business, supported by higher interest income and an expanding loan portfolio.

For non-banking financial companies, profitability must be evaluated alongside funding costs, credit quality and provisioning requirements. Strong loan-book expansion can support future revenue, but the sustainability of that growth depends on underwriting standards and borrowers’ repayment performance.

The results add another important financial-sector development to the ongoing September-quarter earnings season.

Hindustan Zinc Reports Strong Sequential Earnings Growth

Hindustan Zinc reported improved quarterly financial performance, supported by stronger operating profitability.

Consolidated revenue increased 9.8% sequentially to ₹15,093 crore, while EBITDA advanced 14.9% to ₹9,248 crore.

The company’s EBITDA margin improved to 61.3%, compared with 58.6% in the preceding quarter. Consolidated net profit increased 17.2% sequentially to ₹6,412 crore.

The improvement in operating margins is particularly significant for a metals producer because profitability can be influenced by commodity prices, production costs, energy expenses and sales volumes.

The results provide fresh evidence of operating performance in the metals sector, although investors will also need to assess whether current commodity conditions can support similar margins in subsequent quarters.

Jio Platforms IPO Opens for Public Subscription Today

The Jio Platforms IPO enters a new phase on Wednesday, October 21, as its public subscription period begins.

The offering is scheduled to remain open until October 23, with an issue size of approximately ₹30,213 crore.

The price band has been set at ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share, with a minimum application lot of 12 shares.

At the upper end of the price band, the minimum application amount for one lot is ₹13,428.

The offering is one of the largest events in India’s primary market and is attracting attention because of Jio’s substantial presence in telecommunications and digital services.

The actual subscription response will become clearer as bidding progresses. Investors will be watching institutional demand, retail participation and the allocation of shares across investor categories.

Importantly, the opening of the subscription period is a new event, distinct from the earlier announcement of the IPO timetable.

US Corporate Earnings Highlight Divergence Between Industries

Corporate earnings provided another important development in the United States on Tuesday.

Industrial and consumer-related companies contributed to improved sentiment, with stronger results and business outlooks helping support selected stocks.

3M attracted attention after raising its full-year outlook, while Hasbro benefited from stronger demand for its products.

At the same time, investors remained cautious about companies associated with expensive AI infrastructure projects. Concerns about financing requirements and the timing of future returns continued to influence valuations.

This divergence demonstrates that the US equity market is not moving uniformly. Companies showing tangible earnings improvements are attracting attention even as investors question the valuation of some technology businesses.

The distinction is relevant for Indian investors because US corporate spending patterns can influence demand across Indian IT services, manufacturing exports and other internationally exposed industries.

Oil Prices Retreat From Intraday Highs

Energy markets experienced another volatile session on October 20.

Brent crude approached $112 per barrel during trading before retreating to settle below $109.

The reversal helped ease some of the pressure on US equities, although prices remained elevated enough to sustain concerns about inflation and corporate operating costs.

For India, the direction of crude oil remains important because higher import costs can influence inflation, currency demand and the profitability of fuel-intensive businesses.

The latest decline from intraday highs represents a fresh market development, but it does not by itself establish a sustained downward trend in oil prices.

Investors will continue watching supply conditions and geopolitical developments for evidence of whether the recent volatility is easing.

Indian Market Outlook for October 21

The immediate focus for Indian markets is the reopening after the Dussehra holiday, alongside fresh corporate results and the beginning of Jio Platforms’ public subscription.

Several developments could influence trading sentiment. US markets delivered a mixed but generally positive session, Indian financial and metals companies reported new earnings figures, and crude oil retreated from its intraday highs.

However, domestic benchmarks entered the holiday after a sharp decline, indicating that confidence remained fragile.

The market’s response to earnings announcements will be particularly important. Companies delivering strong operating performance may attract selective attention, while disappointing results could continue to pressure individual stocks.

Investors should also distinguish between movements driven by international sentiment and those supported by company-specific financial improvements.

Conclusion

Wednesday’s market session brings several meaningful developments that were not part of OneTrader’s previous weekend coverage.

The latest US trading session showed strength in industrial, healthcare and smaller-company shares despite continued caution toward major technology stocks. In India, new results from Piramal Finance and Hindustan Zinc provide additional evidence about corporate profitability, while the Jio Platforms IPO officially enters its public subscription phase.

With Indian exchanges reopening after a holiday, the market will have an opportunity to respond to these developments.

The central question is whether improving corporate earnings and selective global-market strength can offset continuing concerns about energy costs and domestic equity valuations.
