Price Action Series – Part 8

Premium & Discount Zones – Where Smart Money Buys and Sells

Subtitle:

Learn how institutions decide exact buying and selling zones using a simple but powerful concept.

💡 Introduction — Why Most Traders Enter in the Worst Areas

Retail traders often buy high and sell low.
Smart Money does the opposite — they buy low (discount) and sell high (premium).

Price Action becomes extremely accurate when you combine it with this concept.

Premium & Discount Zones help you:

  • Avoid bad entries
  • Trade only high-probability areas
  • Understand WHERE Smart Money wants to buy or sell
  • Reduce stop-loss hits
  • Improve accuracy even without indicators

Let’s break it down simply.

1️⃣ What Are Premium & Discount Zones?

Premium = Expensive Zone
Smart Money sells here.

Discount = Cheap Zone
Smart Money buys here.

Think of it like shopping:

  • If a product is at 50% off, you buy comfortably.
  • If the price is double, you hesitate.

Market behaves exactly like this.

We use a swing high to swing low (or vice versa) to determine which area is premium and which is discount.

2️⃣ How to Draw Premium–Discount Zones (Simple Method)

Use the Fibonacci Tool (0%–100%)
But don’t use all the levels — only focus on:

  • Above 50% = Premium Zone
  • Below 50% = Discount Zone

📌 Steps:

  1. Identify current swing high & swing low.
  2. Draw fib from low → high for an uptrend.
  3. The 50% line divides price:
    • Below = Discount (Buy Zone)
    • Above = Premium (Sell Zone)

In a Downtrend:

Draw fib from high → low.

  • Below 50% = Premium (Sell Zone)
  • Above 50% = Discount (Buy Zone)

3️⃣ Premium–Discount Logic in Real Trading

🔹 Uptrend (Higher Highs & Higher Lows)

Smart Money waits for price to fall into discount zone.
They don’t buy at the top.

After discount entry, they aim to sell higher into premium levels.

🔹 Downtrend

Smart Money waits for price to retrace into premium zone.
They sell from there and target new lows.

4️⃣ How Smart Money Uses Premium–Discount Zones

This is important:
Smart Money NEVER buys in premium during an uptrend.
And they NEVER sell in discount during a downtrend.

They ALWAYS follow:

BUY in Discount → Target Premium

SELL in Premium → Target Discount

This single rule can instantly reduce most retail mistakes.

5️⃣ Combine Premium–Discount With Structure

Market Structure from Part 3 becomes powerful here.

Example:

Uptrend:

  • Price forms a HH (Higher High)
  • Then retraces
  • When retracement reaches Discount Zone
  • Look for OB, FVG, Liquidity Sweep
  • Enter long
  • Target = Premium Zone

Downtrend:

  • Price forms LL
  • Retraces into Premium Zone
  • Look for bearish OB or liquidity
  • Enter short
  • Target = Discount

6️⃣ Perfect Confluences for Buying in Discount Zone

If discount zone also contains:

✔️ Bullish Order Block
✔️ FVG imbalance below
✔️ Liquidity Sweep
✔️ Break of structure
✔️ Psychological level (round number)

→ Then it becomes a high-probability long setup.

7️⃣ Perfect Confluences for Selling in Premium Zone

If premium zone includes:

✔️ Bearish Order Block
✔️ Liquidity above swing high
✔️ Imbalance in opposite direction
✔️ CHoCH into downtrend
✔️ Overextended move
✔️ News sweep

→ High probability short setup.

8️⃣ Real Market Example (Explained Simply)

📈 Example: NIFTY

Swing Low = 21,000
Swing High = 22,200
50% Discount = 21,600

If price retraces from 22,200 towards 21,600:

  • This is the Discount Buy Zone
  • Look for bullish OB/FVG
  • Market continues to rally towards premium again

📉 Example: Bank Nifty

Swing High = 48,000
Swing Low = 46,000
50% = 47,000

When price retraces toward 47,000 (Premium):

  • Smart Money prepares to sell
  • Liquidity above swing high gets cleaned
  • Market drops back to discount (46,000)

9️⃣ Mistakes Beginners Make

❌ Buying in premium in uptrend
❌ Selling in discount in downtrend
❌ Not marking the right swing points
❌ Confusing micro-swings with major swings
❌ Taking trades without structure confirmation
❌ Placing SL inside premium/discount zones

Premium-Discount helps eliminate most SM traps.

🔟 Pro Tips to Use Like a Smart Money Trader

💡 Tip 1: Always start with Higher Timeframe (H4/Daily) Bias
This gives strongest premium–discount areas.

💡 Tip 2: Use Premium–Discount first before OB/FVG
This tells you where to look for setups.

💡 Tip 3: Combine with Liquidity Sweeps
Discount + Sweep = Powerful Long
Premium + Sweep = Powerful Short

💡 Tip 4: Never trade without location context
Location = 80% of the trade.

1️⃣1️⃣ Premium–Discount Trading Checklist

✔️ Identify swing high & swing low
✔️ Mark 50% midline
✔️ Wait for price in correct zone
✔️ Align with trend direction
✔️ Check OB / FVG / Liquidity
✔️ Look for BOS / CHoCH confirmation
✔️ Enter with SL beyond structure
✔️ Target opposite zone (Discount → Premium or vice-versa)

🧠 Conclusion

Premium–Discount Zones simplify the entire price action approach.
They show EXACTLY where Smart Money wants to buy and sell.

If Order Blocks and FVG are “entry tools,”
Premium–Discount is the map that tells you where to prepare.

Master this concept → you’ll avoid 70% of bad trades.
