Gaurav had a theory about fantasy cricket: if he picked the right eleven, a ₹49 entry could become ₹49,000. The theory had survived forty contests, a hundred arguments and exactly zero payouts.
One evening, when the rent was due in three days, he put ₹3,000 into a mega contest. His captain was a batter who had scored a century last month and a duck the previous Tuesday.
His sister Isha looked at the screen and asked a simple question: “Is this entertainment or income?” Gaurav said it was strategic entertainment. Isha asked for the strategy. Gaurav described a gut feeling with a spreadsheet attached.
The captain scored four runs. Gaurav’s rank was 41,203 out of 41,500. Isha did not say anything. She just opened a notes app and created a list titled “Things ₹3,000 could have been.” It had a SIP, a month of groceries and one very nice dinner.
Gaurav set a monthly limit of ₹300 for fantasy games, strictly as entertainment money, and moved the rest into an index fund. His team name is still “Sure Shot Warriors,” which Isha says is the only unrealistic part left.
