The Shagun Envelope Accounting

Finance Fun StoriesNovember 7, 2026·The Lighter Side of Money and Markets

After the cousin’s wedding, Meenakshi Aunty sat down with a pile of shagun envelopes, a pen and the face of an auditor. Each envelope held a name, an amount, and a silent expectation that it would one day be matched.

She kept a notebook of every wedding the family had attended in twenty years. It showed who had given ₹501, who had given ₹2,100, and who had given a steel water bottle and an apology.

Her nephew Dev, who worked in a finance company, called it the world’s oldest informal ledger. “It’s a social lending system with no interest and a lot of memory,” he said. Meenakshi Aunty said that was a very rude way to describe love.

Dev built her a simple spreadsheet anyway. It tracked gifts given, gifts received and the lovely discovery that the family had, over twenty years, given more than it received and had still never been unhappy about it.

The notebook stayed. The spreadsheet became its backup. And at the next wedding, Meenakshi Aunty gave ₹2,100 without checking either, because some accounts, she said, are balanced by blessings.
