The cousins started a challenge: each person had to save ₹100 without telling the others how. They called it Operation Secret Savings and promised not to spend the money on snacks, games, or “a tiny celebration.”
On day one, Ritu put a hundred-rupee note in a jar labelled EMERGENCY. Her cousin Arun put his in an envelope labelled DO NOT OPEN. Their youngest cousin, Pihu, transferred ₹100 to a savings account and immediately took a screenshot to admire her discipline.
By day three, the challenge became competitive. Arun hid his envelope inside a finance book. Ritu made a spreadsheet with colour-coded progress. Pihu asked the bank app to congratulate her again. The app sent a notification about a sale. Everyone ignored it for seven minutes, which they counted as a major victory.
At the end of the week, they brought their savings to the table. Ritu had saved ₹300. Arun had saved ₹200 but spent ₹100 on a lock for the envelope. Pihu had saved ₹400 and earned ₹2.14 interest. She called it “passive income.”
They pooled the money for a family picnic, but first put aside a little for next month. Their aunt smiled. “Wonderful. You’ve learned to save together.” Then she asked if anyone had a spare hundred for the picnic snacks. The cousins opened the emergency jar and made her sign a repayment schedule.
