Suresh got his Diwali bonus and made a plan: half for investing, half for the family. By evening, the family half had grown. The sofa needed replacing, the kitchen needed a mixer, and the neighbour’s new television had started a quiet war. Then the investing half was borrowed temporarily, with sincere promises, to pay for the sofa. Suresh stood in the living room, comfortable and slightly broke, and nodded at his wife. ‘At least,’ he said, ‘my asset allocation is now fifty percent furniture.’ She laughed. The sofa, being new and expensive, did not give back any returns but looked excellent in photos.
