OneTrader Daily Market Roundup | Monday, October 26, 2026
Indian equity markets staged a strong recovery on Monday, October 26, 2026, ending a four-session losing streak as encouraging corporate earnings and renewed buying in pharmaceutical, metal and selected heavyweight stocks helped reverse early losses. The recovery extended to mid-cap and small-cap shares, although elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty surrounding global monetary policy continued to weigh on sentiment.
The BSE Sensex gained 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to settle at 22,753.20. The Bank Nifty rose 79.35 points, or 0.15%, to finish at 54,366.70, reflecting a comparatively modest recovery in banking shares.
Sensex and Nifty Recover From Early Losses
Monday’s session began weakly, with both benchmark indices falling approximately 0.9% in early trading. Concerns about high crude oil prices and the approaching US Federal Reserve policy decision encouraged caution.

However, buying emerged in companies reporting encouraging quarterly results, allowing the indices to reverse their losses. The recovery strengthened during the afternoon, and both benchmarks finished near their session highs.
The Nifty Midcap 100 advanced 1.19%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 1.38%. This was an important improvement after the previous week’s sharp losses in smaller companies.
Market breadth also turned positive. One closing-session report recorded 2,063 advancing stocks, 1,525 declining stocks and 93 unchanged on the NSE. The India VIX nevertheless rose to approximately 17.14, indicating that expectations of market volatility remained elevated.
The combination of improving breadth and rising volatility suggested that investors were returning selectively to equities but remained sensitive to external risks.

Metal and Pharma Stocks Lead the Recovery
Metal and pharmaceutical shares were among Monday’s strongest performers.
The Nifty Metal index gained approximately 2.21%, supported by buying in major steel producers following quarterly earnings announcements. The Nifty Pharma index advanced approximately 1.76%, helped by a sharp rise in Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.
Oil and gas stocks also strengthened, while infrastructure and information technology shares recorded more moderate gains.
The Nifty IT index advanced approximately 0.87%, while Bank Nifty rose just 0.15%. The comparatively weak banking performance reflected mixed investor reactions to financial-sector earnings.

Consumer-oriented sectors remained less consistent, with FMCG and consumer-durable shares facing selective selling pressure.
The sectoral performance highlighted the growing importance of company-specific results and earnings expectations in determining market direction.
Top Stock Movers: Dr Reddy’s and JSW Steel Rally, Shriram Finance Declines
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories emerged as the leading Nifty 50 gainer, rising 6.62% to ₹1,310.90.
The pharmaceutical company attracted buying interest after its September-quarter earnings exceeded market expectations, even though its consolidated profit declined year on year. Lower revenue from lenalidomide in North America remained an important challenge.

JSW Steel advanced 6.28%, supported by a substantial improvement in quarterly profitability. The company reported that profit had tripled, encouraging buying in the stock and supporting the broader metal sector.
BSE Ltd gained approximately 3.97% following a brokerage upgrade, while Adani Ports and Eternal also featured among the stronger Nifty constituents.
Kotak Mahindra Bank advanced approximately 2.4% after reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly profit.
On the losing side, Shriram Finance fell 4.62% to ₹825 as investors assessed asset-quality concerns, elevated credit costs and a reduction in the company’s annual loan-growth forecast.

Tata Consumer Products declined approximately 2.84%, while Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life and HDFC Bank also finished lower.
Outside the benchmark indices, Ather Energy surged after reporting a quarterly profit, while KEC International gained following an announcement of new turnkey orders.
FII and DII Activity: Latest Confirmed Institutional Flows
Institutional investment activity remains an important indicator of market sentiment, particularly during periods of currency weakness and international uncertainty.
The latest confirmed provisional cash-market figures available at the reporting cutoff relate to Friday, October 23, 2026.

| Institutional investors | Trading date | Net activity |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) | October 23, 2026 | +₹887.65 crore |
| Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) | October 23, 2026 | +₹3,235.36 crore |
Both foreign and domestic institutions recorded net purchases on Friday, even though benchmark indices declined during that session.
The figures refer specifically to provisional cash-market activity. They should not be confused with broader foreign portfolio investment statistics, which use different reporting methods.
October 26 institutional cash-market figures were not confirmed in the latest accessible dataset and have therefore not been attributed to Monday’s session.
Rupee Weakens as Crude Oil Remains Elevated
The Indian rupee weakened for a third consecutive trading session on Monday, closing at ₹95.1850 against the US dollar, compared with ₹94.9400 on Friday.

The currency faced pressure from increased dollar demand among importers, elevated crude oil prices and concerns about foreign capital flows.
Brent crude remained near $115 per barrel during Monday’s international trading, although prices eased from recent highs. One reported market observation placed Brent futures at approximately $115.16 per barrel, down 1.34%.
The high level of oil prices remained a concern for India because of the country’s dependence on imported energy. Sustained increases can raise the import bill, contribute to inflation and reduce profit margins for businesses with substantial fuel and transportation expenses.
The Reserve Bank of India’s management of currency-market volatility remains relevant, but no new RBI interest-rate decision has been attributed to October 26.
Corporate Earnings and Global Markets Remain in Focus
Quarterly earnings were an important driver of Monday’s recovery.
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories gained despite reporting a year-on-year decline in consolidated profit, as its earnings exceeded market expectations. JSW Steel benefited from a substantial improvement in profitability, while Kotak Mahindra Bank attracted buying following its quarterly results.
Shriram Finance moved in the opposite direction as investors focused on credit costs, asset quality and the company’s revised growth expectations.
Outside the benchmark indices, Ather Energy advanced approximately 14% after reporting a quarterly net profit of ₹1.26 crore, compared with a loss of ₹154 crore a year earlier.

KEC International also attracted attention after announcing turnkey orders worth ₹2,872 crore.
International markets were comparatively cautious ahead of a busy week for monetary-policy decisions and corporate earnings.
The US Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its policy decision on Wednesday, October 28. Investors will closely examine its assessment of inflation and guidance on future interest rates.
The European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are also in focus as international markets evaluate monetary-policy conditions.

Gold traded around the $4,000-per-ounce region in Monday’s international commodity commentary, after a substantial decline during the previous week. This was an indicative trading observation, not a final settlement price.
Nifty Outlook for Tuesday, October 27
The Nifty’s close at 22,753.20 represents a recovery after four consecutive declining sessions.
The 22,700–22,750 region will be an important area to monitor during Tuesday’s trading. Continued buying above Monday’s closing level could indicate improving short-term sentiment, while renewed weakness below 22,600 would bring the previous week’s lower trading range back into focus.
These are observational market reference areas rather than guaranteed support or resistance levels.

Investors will monitor additional quarterly earnings announcements, crude oil prices, the rupee, updated institutional investment flows and overnight movements in global equity markets.
The approaching Federal Reserve decision is another important event because changes in US interest-rate expectations can affect the dollar, bond yields and investment flows into emerging markets.
Monday’s improvement in broader-market participation was encouraging, particularly after the previous week’s substantial losses in mid-cap and small-cap stocks.
Nevertheless, elevated energy prices and uncertainty surrounding inflation and corporate earnings mean that one positive trading session does not establish a sustained recovery.

The market ended Monday with stronger buying across several sectors, but the next few sessions will help determine whether the rebound can develop into a more durable improvement in investor sentiment.
