This Sensex Nifty weekly review covers a holiday-shortened week for Indian equities, with four trading sessions between October 19 and October 23, 2026. Both benchmarks fell in every session, as costly crude oil, foreign selling and weak quarterly earnings reactions pressured the market. The NSE and BSE were shut on Tuesday, October 20, for Dussehra.

Midcaps, Smallcaps and Sector Movers
The broader market fell harder than the benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 lost roughly 5.6% and 7.3% over the week. On Friday alone they dropped 2.21% and 2.94%, and of 3,724 stocks traded on the NSE, 3,011 declined against 624 advances. Read more in our report on the sharp midcap and smallcap sell-off.
Fifteen of the 16 major sectors ended the week lower. Consumer durables, energy, FMCG and automobile stocks recorded weekly declines of roughly 3.5% to 6.4%. On Friday, metals fell 2.71%, realty 2.38% and PSU banks 2.26%, while IT slipped only 0.27%.
There were pockets of strength. PSU banks were the only sector to close higher on Monday, with Punjab National Bank up about 4.8% and Union Bank of India about 5.3% after quarterly results. Axis Bank fell about 4.2% that day after profit missed estimates, and HDFC Bank reported a net interest margin of 3.16%. IT stocks led on Wednesday, with the Nifty IT index up about 2.88%.
Among individual stocks, eMudhra fell about 20% on Thursday over compromised digital certificates. Swiggy plunged more than 16% on Friday after its September-quarter results, Colgate-Palmolive India fell about 5%, and Eternal rose 4.25% to Rs 317.40.
FII and DII Flows
Provisional cash-market data for the sessions confirmed so far shows a split. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of Rs 1,148.64 crore on Monday, net buyers of Rs 1,022.32 crore on Wednesday and net sellers of Rs 3,458.70 crore on Thursday, a net outflow of about Rs 3,585 crore across the three sessions. Domestic institutions bought Rs 3,201.19 crore, Rs 1,614.32 crore and Rs 2,891.32 crore on those days, about Rs 7,707 crore in total. Friday’s institutional figures were not confirmed at the time of writing.
RBI, Rupee and Crude Oil
The Reserve Bank of India’s October 7 rate increase and the minutes of that policy meeting remained in focus for investors. The rupee gained about 0.5% to close at 94.46 against the US dollar on Wednesday, its strongest level since early September, helped by inflows linked to the roughly $3.2 billion Jio Platforms IPO, before oil prices trimmed its gains.
Brent crude traded around or above $114 a barrel on Friday after reports of attacks affecting Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure. Higher oil prices raise India’s import bill and inflation risks, which is why energy costs featured in the week’s selling.
Calendar Note
