Sensex, Nifty Closing Today, October 22, 2026: Sensex Falls 460 Points as Nifty Slips Below 22,700

Onetrader Daily Market Roundup | Thursday, October 22, 2026

Indian equity markets closed lower for a third consecutive trading session on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as rising crude oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East intensified concerns about inflation and corporate profitability.

The BSE Sensex declined 460.30 points, or 0.62%, to close at 73,249.39, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 123.70 points, or 0.54%, to settle at 22,687.65.

The decline was accompanied by selling across much of the broader market, with investors reducing exposure to sectors vulnerable to higher energy costs and persistent inflation. Although some stocks attracted selective buying, the overall market remained under pressure.

Sensex and Nifty Extend Losses for Third Consecutive Session

Thursday’s trading began weakly as Indian equities followed negative cues from Asian markets. Elevated crude prices added to concerns about India’s import bill and the possibility of sustained inflationary pressure.

The Nifty closed below 22,700, while the Sensex lost more than 460 points. The broader mid-cap and small-cap indices declined approximately 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively, according to Reuters’ closing report.

Thirteen of the 16 major sectors ended lower, confirming that the decline was not limited to a small group of heavyweight companies.

The weakness in smaller stocks was particularly significant because it indicated that risk aversion extended beyond the benchmark indices. Investors remained selective amid uncertainty surrounding corporate earnings, interest rates and global economic conditions.

IT, Energy and FMCG Stocks Lead Sectoral Declines

Information technology, energy and fast-moving consumer goods were among Thursday’s weakest major sectors.

Technology stocks came under pressure after outperforming during the previous session. The reversal reflected a cautious environment for growth-oriented companies as investors monitored global interest-rate expectations and international equity-market volatility.

Consumer-related businesses also faced concerns about rising costs. Higher crude oil prices can affect packaging, transportation and manufacturing expenses, creating additional pressure on companies that cannot immediately pass these increases to customers.

Energy-sector performance remained mixed across individual businesses, as higher oil prices can benefit some producers while increasing costs for refiners, distributors and other oil-dependent companies.

The broad sectoral decline suggested that investors were reassessing the earnings implications of a prolonged period of expensive energy.

HDFC Bank, Reliance and eMudhra Among Major Decliners

HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries were among the important contributors to Thursday’s benchmark losses.

HDFC Bank declined approximately 1.8%, while Reliance Industries fell around 2%. Given their significant weights in the major indices, weakness in these companies had a substantial influence on the overall market.

Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services lost approximately 3.3%. Brokerages had highlighted concerns about funding costs and potential risks associated with changes affecting insurance distribution.

Consumer and healthcare-related companies also attracted attention following regulatory developments. Nestlé India, Abbott India and Zydus Wellness declined after India’s food safety regulator raised concerns about promotional claims associated with certain products.

Outside the benchmark indices, digital trust and cybersecurity company eMudhra fell approximately 20% following disclosures concerning compromised digital certificates.

The company-specific developments reinforced the importance of distinguishing broad market weakness from selling triggered by identifiable corporate or regulatory events.

Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement and Larsen & Toubro were among the relatively stronger Nifty stocks, providing some support against the wider decline.

FII and DII Activity: Latest Confirmed Institutional Data

The latest verifiable cash-market institutional figures available at the reporting cutoff relate to Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Investor category Trading date Net activity
Foreign Institutional Investors October 21 +₹1,022.32 crore
Domestic Institutional Investors October 21 +₹1,614.32 crore

Both categories recorded net purchases during Wednesday’s session. However, these flows did not prevent weakness in the broader market, demonstrating that institutional purchases alone do not guarantee an increase in benchmark indices.

October 22 cash-market institutional figures were not confirmed in the retrieved data and are therefore excluded.

Crude Oil and Rupee Remain Important Market Risks

Brent crude rose above $110 per barrel on Thursday, with later market reporting indicating prices near $112 as Middle East supply concerns intensified.

Reports of further attacks in Saudi Arabia increased concerns about energy production and transportation disruptions.

For India, higher crude prices can increase import costs, add pressure to inflation and reduce profitability for businesses dependent on petroleum products. The potential effects extend to transportation, manufacturing, aviation and consumer goods.

The rupee also remained sensitive to developments in crude oil markets and foreign capital flows. Recent foreign-exchange inflows associated with the Jio Platforms IPO had supported the currency, but elevated oil prices continued to pose risks.

A consistent, independently verified October 22 rupee closing quotation was not established from the sources reviewed, so an exact closing exchange rate has been omitted.

RBI Policy and Global Markets

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee minutes, released on October 21, indicated that further interest-rate increases could become necessary to control inflation. Policymakers nevertheless expressed caution about an aggressive tightening cycle because of risks to economic growth.

Earlier in October, the MPC had unanimously increased the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and changed its policy stance to calibrated tightening.

The minutes are important for equity investors because higher borrowing costs can affect corporate investment, consumer demand and company valuations.

Global markets also faced pressure on Thursday. Asian equities weakened amid geopolitical uncertainty, while international investors assessed technology-company earnings and the possibility that elevated energy costs could keep inflation high.

Gold traded lower in international markets as investors reassessed interest-rate expectations. Bitcoin remained exposed to changes in global risk appetite, although no reliable synchronized price observation was established for inclusion in this report.

Outlook for Friday, October 23

The Nifty’s close at 22,687.65 puts the 22,700 area in focus for Friday’s trading. Investors will monitor whether the index can recover above that level or whether weakness continues across the broader market.

The most important developments to watch include Middle East tensions, crude oil prices, the rupee, quarterly corporate earnings, updated institutional investment flows and overnight US market movements.

The broader market’s ability to stabilise will be particularly important. With thirteen major sectors declining on Thursday, a sustainable recovery would require stronger participation across sectors rather than gains concentrated in a few heavyweight stocks.
