Changing your mobile number is an important Demat account update that investors should not ignore. Your registered mobile number is commonly used for OTP verification, transaction alerts, account notifications and other important communication related to your investments. If you have changed your phone number but your Demat account still has the old number, you could miss important alerts or face difficulties while completing certain account-related processes.
The good news is that many brokers and Depository Participants provide digital methods to update registered contact details. However, the exact procedure can differ depending on the broker, account type and whether additional verification is required. Understanding the basic process can help investors update their details without unnecessary delays.
Why Should You Update Your Mobile Number?
Your registered mobile number is an important part of your Demat account information. Investors may receive transaction alerts, OTPs, verification requests and other account-related notifications on this number. If the old number is no longer active, important communication may not reach you.
An outdated mobile number can also become inconvenient when you need to verify an account-related request. For example, you may need an OTP while changing account information, accessing certain services or completing an electronic verification process. Keeping the mobile number updated helps ensure that your Demat account information remains current.

How to Change Your Mobile Number Online
The first step is to log in to your broker’s website or mobile application using your existing credentials. Look for sections such as Profile, Account Settings, Personal Details, Account Details or KYC Details. The exact name and location of the option can vary between brokers.
Once you find the profile or account details section, look for the registered mobile number and an option to edit or update it. Select the mobile-number update option and enter your new mobile number carefully. Some platforms may ask you to provide both the old and new numbers as part of the verification process.
After entering the new number, the broker may send an OTP to the registered email address, existing mobile number or new mobile number. The verification method depends on the broker and the type of account. Enter the required OTP and complete the authentication process.
Some brokers may also require additional identity verification before approving the change. This can include Aadhaar-based eSign, video verification or another authentication method. If additional verification is required, follow the instructions displayed by the broker rather than attempting to bypass the process.

What If You No Longer Have Access to Your Old Mobile Number?
This is one of the most common situations investors face after changing their phone number. If you no longer have access to your old number, the normal OTP process may not work.
In such cases, the broker may provide an alternative verification process. You may be asked to verify your identity using your registered email address, Aadhaar-based authentication, video verification or a modification form. Some brokers may require additional documentation before updating the mobile number.
The exact procedure depends on the broker and Demat account structure. Therefore, if the online process does not allow you to continue because the old number is unavailable, check the broker’s account-support process for mobile-number modification.
Can You Change Your Mobile Number and Email Address Together?
Some brokers allow investors to update multiple contact details, while others process one modification request at a time. If you also need to change your registered email address, check whether the platform allows both requests simultaneously.

It is better to complete one update successfully before starting another if the broker restricts multiple account modifications. This can help avoid verification conflicts or delays.
Does Changing Your Mobile Number Affect Your Investments?
Changing your registered mobile number does not normally mean that your shares or other securities are sold or transferred. The purpose of the update is to change the contact information associated with your account.
However, investors should complete the verification process correctly and wait for confirmation that the new number has been successfully updated. Until the change is confirmed, important communications may continue to be directed to the previously registered details.
After the update, check your account profile and confirm that the new number is displayed correctly. It is also useful to verify whether you are receiving the expected account notifications.
What Other Details Should You Check?
When updating your mobile number, it can be a good opportunity to review other important information linked to your Demat account. Check whether your email address, residential address, bank details, PAN information and nomination details are accurate.
Investors who have moved to a new address or changed their bank account should not leave those details outdated. Keeping account information current can make future transactions, verification requests and communication easier.
Important Safety Tips
Never share your OTP, password, TPIN, trading PIN or other confidential authentication details with anyone claiming to help update your Demat account. Genuine account updates should be completed through your broker’s official application, website or authorised support channels.
Be particularly careful with calls or messages asking you to provide an OTP to “activate” a new mobile number. If you receive an unexpected request, independently access your broker’s official platform instead of clicking unknown links or following instructions from an unverified caller.
Final Thoughts
Changing the mobile number in a Demat account is an important account-maintenance task, especially after switching to a new phone number. Many brokers provide online methods through their websites or mobile applications, while certain situations may require additional verification or documentation. The basic process usually involves opening your profile or account settings, entering the new number, completing the required verification and waiting for confirmation.
Once the change is completed, investors should verify that the new mobile number is correctly updated and that account notifications are working normally. Keeping your Demat account information current can help avoid missed alerts, verification problems and unnecessary delays when you need to manage your investments.
